I want to buy a real ale lover a small gift (£10). Maybe a book or a bottle of something nice, but I'm open to other suggestions. Any ideas?

Ah ok, anywhere in the Southampton area and you could visit Bitter Virtue: www.bittervirtue.co.uk

Real Ale guide is always a safe bet but I never use mine tbh.

http://www.palmersbrewery.com/page.php?p=shop_ales < a bit pricey for what you're after but I just discovered this brewers wares the other day, the Dorset Gold is really very good.

Or maybe something from here (not a huge selection though): http://www.beermerchants.com/ I would personally recommend the Anchor Steam beer.

The nicest ale I've ever had is Dark Island Reserve Orcadian Ale.

Matured for 3 months in Malt Whisky casks (I think Scapa). Awesome, but it is about £12-18 for a 75cl bottle.

I like the idea of buying a pricey bottle of good ale, something you wouldn't normally buy yourself. I don't mind going a bit over £10. Now to find somewhere reliable that stocks the stuff....

Get some lambic beer from Belgium. That's serious beer, and seriously delicious.

Goodness only knows whether you can order it over the web.

It's also rather divisive - I can't drink it, personally, though I can appreciate that it's pretty unique. You can get some lambics from http://www.beerhere.co.uk (cases) or http://www.beermerchants.com (bottles), or from a nice pub in Cambridge which tends to have a decent selection of them.

...That's not hugely helpful to the OP, really, but I can't think of much ale-related around that price range. I'd probably spend it on a bottle of something nice and Belgian too, my choice would be a Caracole Nostradamus - but it's so subjective, so specific recommendations would basically just make this in to a thread of naming your favourite beer.

Best of luck anyway :)
