Any reason to upgrade to windows 8?

If you have Win 8 there's also very little reason not to put it on. If it works on 7 it'll work on 8.
I have at least one game that won't run under windows 8 that would under 7 without third party modification so your statement is false, only a little probably though :-P

I went from XP to 8 on my desk top ( have a win 7 laptop ) and although it took a few hours to get used to I really like it .... I'm running t on 3 screens.

I like it, seems snappier than 7 to me

I don't really use the start menu, but I never did in 7 either

depends what you do.
if you do media consumption, books, Netflix, magazines, news or anything along those lines, then metro apps are night and day above the desktop experience.

I'd disagree with this, particularly in a multi-monitor setup where one click can take attention away from the currently open metro app. The whole system just seems half baked and I've found myself shying away from the metro apps and returning to their desktop equivalents. The music app however is pretty neat as it allows you to stream music with only the odd advert (always the same for some weird reason) from any artist (though I've hit the limitations of it sometimes).

Also, why can't the stupid things update themselves instead of me clicking into the store app, clicking the updates and then clicking the update al button. That really is a step backwards and probably only one of my few gripes with the OS.

I'm not sure which specifics you are referring to, but metro apps stay open no problem on secondary monitors. They run concurrently with desktop applications fine.

Also, automatic app updates are coming with 8.1.

if a gamer id stick with win 7.

i liked a few features overall win 7 is better .

I'm a gamer but prefer Win8 so figure that one out ;),getting back to the main question I would say try the free Win8 Preview version for yourself but give it time since things have changed etc(longer learning curve but not hard),then you can decide eitherway, for me it was worth it because I purchased Win8 at a great price and features like reset/refresh ,improved security are always nice to have(just use wiki for Win8 full features).

End of the day only you can really answer the question for yourself.

They do for me as well but only if the other program is already open on the second screen, all other times the metro app closes and has to be relaunched.

It must be application specific because I can launch IE, File Explorer, Chrome, Remote Desktop just fine, yet Word does indeed close the metro app for some reason.

But not enough positive reasons to change

To be fair you can only speak for yourself,we all have different reasons etc...end of the day everybody has to make their own mind up eitherway.

I'll say I thought it was worth it and I won't bother you with reasons why.

Is it better ? Yes in every way

Do you need to upgrade ? No

If you're buying a new OS for a new PC i'd say get it if you're on 7 I'd say it's upto you.

I do honestly not regret the upgrade it's a fantastic OS it's faster thinks make a lot of sense once you see past the lack of 18 year old clunky and poorly executed start menu. The OS really begins to make sense but as I said there is no need to upgrade from 7 yet All though I think the windows 8 style of OS is here to stay even if they return the start menu for those too awkward to accept change. They will still reward those who use the new gui more.

Its like the office versions, they are all the same really, they have just got more bloated over the years. A bit like win7 to win 8, its not radical change, microsoft has just produced win8 for more cash flow. But win8 is nowhere as needed as xp to vista/win7 days

Microsoft needs to release a new os every 5yrs, spending a long time researching like they did with vista/win7 and not just banging out new OS for the sake of it.

Hyper-V host has been a big reason for me to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro.

It takes a little while to get used to the changes but once your used to them, I can navigate round the OS very quickly.

Exactly. I don't know how anyone can state 'it's not worth it' as an objective fact. Something like HyperV or native VHD mounting or Bitlocker could be worth the price of admission alone.

It just depends on what you want out of an OS.

I felt Win7 was a minor upgrade over Vista ie only offered me slight speed increase and less UAC nagging,Win8 offered me a lot more then Win7 ever did over Vista so you see my point.

Also Microsoft are on a yearly upgrade from what I read so expect to see a new OS often, however as always its down to the user in question if they want to upgrade or not.
Btw XP to Vista was 6 year gap(2001 and 2007) and 2 year gap between Vista and Win7 release(2007-2009), Win8 was 3 years after Win7(2009-2012).

not entirely true the Office when it had it's overhaul to this Ribbon feature was an awkward change at first that proved fantastic. it's getting better and better with every update too.

As for testing 5 years etc 7 was out for a fair while I think with the current trend in the market it was important for microsoft to get 8 out when it did. Microsoft needs to lead if it want's to stay infront and 7 was just what vista should have been.

8 is a step in the right direction for cross platform consistency. I'd be surprised if the Xbox Os doesn't have some similarities to windows 8.

other than that there's lots of little stuff like. MS account which saves most of your settings, refresh/restart which is great, fast boot and many many other things.

if you have it stick win8 on, if you don't, nothing wrong with w7.

comments like this are not helpful. its obvious which is desktop stuff and which is metro stuff, its also an instant switch, so it doesn't matter if you go between the two , I do.
Gaming, web browsing, office - desktop
all other media consumption - metro

its is not purely touch based either. even with K+M for media consumption is absolutely miles ahead in metro. neither of my devices are touch screen and there's no way in hell I would move back.
desktop works like win7, metro experience for certain tasks is so far ahead.

I don't really read magazines or books or the computer and little news. Boot times are instant with sleep mode anyway. Doesn't seem that much reason for me to switch then. I'll try the preview version sometime anyway.
