Any reason to upgrade to windows 8?

Reasons to upgrade:
- Better general performance
- Full screen Start menu (I see it as a better desktop to pin shortcuts and widgets to that isn't covered up by running programs)
- Use of Modern UI apps if you want to (completely optional - every one can be uninstalled AFAIK)
- Refresh/Reset PC
- Hyper V if you need it
- Storage spaces if you want it

Not many negatives really. Occasionally you'll have to use a different settings menu, consistency should be improved in Blue. If you're hung up on losing sight of your work for 2 seconds while launching a program not pinned on the task bar then this isn't for you. Oh and the shut down button takes about a click longer to hit (once found). Not that it's something I do much in a working day so never bothered me. Haven't found a program that hasn't worked like it does in 7.

I love that feature. It's such a shame Windows 7 doesn't have it.

i have windows 8 on the new laptop, i found it awkward to use at the start, then i installed the classic start bar using ninite (best website out there for fresh installs).

imo you should try and use it on as stock for at least a month, if you don't like it install the classic start bar, i hated the new UI until about 3 weeks into using it but after that i decided why not just stick with what i find easier.

the boot times are lightening fast, i mean it's just insanely fast.

i wil be upgrading everything to windows 8, it is the future after all, your better off doing it rather than getting left behind.

everything is compatible, so i don't see any reason why anybody wouldn't especially since the biggest gripe is the UI, which can be modified to act exactly like the old one.

Boot times to modernui is fast, boot times to desktop + loading of applications set to auto run is no different to windows seven.

Unless there is a specific delay in the boot process (it can happen, a particular driver for example) then hybrid boot MUST be faster because it's doing less at boot time.

You'll get diminishing returns if you have a lot of autostart processes because of course that will greatly increase the overall start up time, but booting to the desktop will still technically be faster with hybrid boot. You just might not notice it as much.

Unless you have an active touch screen then i don't see any real benefit. I'd certainly wait for 8.1 to be released later in the year. That's just my opinion.

This. Or if you have dual monitors it's quite nice, one runs as metro and the other the classic desktop.

Like I said, getting to modern ui is fast, but when you take into account loading of auto run apps there is no discernible difference, given that most of my boot time is waiting for the system to POST windows 8 could boot fifty percent faster and there would still be no real world difference to me.

Is it better ? Yes in every way

Do you need to upgrade ? No

If you're buying a new OS for a new PC i'd say get it if you're on 7 I'd say it's upto you.

I do honestly not regret the upgrade it's a fantastic OS it's faster thinks make a lot of sense once you see past the lack of 18 year old clunky and poorly executed start menu. The OS really begins to make sense but as I said there is no need to upgrade from 7 yet All though I think the windows 8 style of OS is here to stay even if they return the start menu for those too awkward to accept change. They will still reward those who use the new gui more.

^^ :)
