My better half bought me a telescope because i like looking at the stars. Now i get to see them bigger. Just wondering what advice / websites / forums anyone can give me as i am a complete and utter noob at this. I am a bit of a nerd, but hey, everyone who works with pcs usually is to some extent :D.

So, anyone point me in the right direction?

Waits for someone to say 'look up . . . . ' :p

Head over to http://www.stellarium.org/ and download the free programme. It shows the night sky in a 3d view including horizon etc and it updates in realtime so it shows exactly what you see in the sky. Just enter your nearest location to the programme observatory presets and away you go. Damn good programme and free as well. Only a 35mb download as well, you should get a great view of Mars tonight, it is at present in the east about 45degrees high and shining very red!

not a stargazer as such but on clear njghts i like to go to the park and just stare up. Its really peaceful just gazing, listening to mellow music and havig some time to myself. Its great cause i dont need a telescope or anything, only have to look up

now all i need is a girlfriend :p

Or a pair of good binoculars :)

*Disclaimer* i dont mean for looking into peoples windows :p

Your local Lidl might still have some pairs of Bresser binoculars they had on a special offer before chrimbo for £9.99. Decent bins at a excellent price, a couple of months ago Lidl were selling Meade bins for the £9.99 as well!! That was a storming good deal!!

i'm going to assume it's just a smallish telescope here...

why not just try moongazing for a while, when i had my telescope i found that much more interesting that the stars. The magnification really does make it possible to veiw the moon in much greater details seeing things that wern't there with the naked eye... Like some smaller craters and stuff.

Clue #1: if it looks bigger through the telescope then it's not a star. If you used the Hubble telescope with some sophisticated software then there are about twelve stars which look bigger. Apart from them, all stars still look like points of light. You just see a lot more of them with a telescope.

You got my point though . . . :)

Tufty Fella - Its a Celestron Nexstar 80SLT which automatically aligns for noobs like me :p. Apparently she did quite a bit of research into it. Id like to look for planets etc, some of which are visible to the naked eye.
And im at the stargazers lounge now. Quite a good site. Now i know what end of the telescope to look through . . . .
Just got to wait for a clear night to play with it.

Hi,

Not a proper star gazer as such but always spend a good 20-30 mins staring at the sky on my 'after dark golf course walks'

Got night vision too and it looks truly awe inspiring looking through that at a night sky :)

Regards,

Dave.

Indeed, love lookin at stars myself, never seem to get the time though :(, must make more of an effort in future I think!, Just got a huge book called the 'cosmos' and shows amazing pictures in great detail of everything from solar system scale to the full universe, truely inspiring, was on offer at the works stationary shops for £15 down from £60, if you love the night sky you will love that book.
