Any (stoke) locals know of interesting restuarants?

Bored of steak house / indian / chinese - anyone able to recommend anything different in the north staffs / south cheshire area?

I've checked out some online reviews of some places (a Spanish in Newcastle / Japanese in Stoke) but the reviews are mixed - would prefer some personal recommendations.

I can recommend Portofino's in Hanley, very nice Italian restaurant.

Depending on what you like the Swynnerton Arms in Meir Heath has some of the best "pub food" I have ever had. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon!

Back in my student days I only really ventured out to the Steak house in Newcastle under Lyme, The Sneyd arms at Keele and weatherspoons along with i think the Cherry Tree pub in Newcastle out of all of them i would recommend the steakhouse and the Sneyd but since your looking for something different that doesn't really help :p

I second the Swan with Two Necks. Amazing grub for the price, and the place is quite nice too. Great to take a girlie ;)

Went to Miso the other day - Japanese place in Stoke on recommendation from a friend. Came away disappointed, food was ok but nothing special and the portions were very small. Came out hungry and 35 quid lighter. :(

I was in there last Wednesday having my usual Swynnerton chips and Steak & kidney pie.
Double chips because Mrs Dimple didn't eat hers.

We also use the Man In Space, Trentham Hotel, The Gables, Harvester (next to Britannia), The Florence and Rose Of Kashmir in a Wednesday round robin although we haven't gone tonight.

Portofinos is awful so I'm sorry but ignore that recommendation! :p

Swan with two necks is really nice.

I know you wanted something exciting but I need to recommend the old plough in Hanley. Simply the best steaks you'll evier have in Staffordshire. My father in law takes all his important clients from asia there to experience the steaks. Good luck trying to get a table at the weekend though!

Legs of man in sandbach is another favourite. Really nice food there.

Only different style I can think of is probably Castro's in cheddleton as its a Mexican.

There's others but they are more of the same really unless you want to travel further north into Cheshire/Manchester. The above are probably the best around in my opinion. (apart from Castro's as my knowledge of good Mexican restaurants is extremely limited :))

Edit : almost Chinese so you may be sick of it too but there's two really good Thai restaurants in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Blue chilli on king street, and Art of Siam right in the centre. Touch and go between which is better, I'd edge towards blue chilli, but prefer the authentic thaidecor in art of Siam so find myself going there more.

Wouldn't recommend Castros in Cheddleton as a recommendation I'm afraid. Very bland Mexican food. Do agree with tommo on Legs of Man though. That place is packed to capacity at 12:00 midday, that is the sign of a good place!

I would play a wildcard here and go for Sawadee Thai Taste in Stoke, Apple the owner is nuts but great fun, and the food I found very good.

Always prefered Roberto's. Cheaper and much nicer imho

I'd add La Dolce Vita in Stone to the list of Italian restaurants. We've been a few times and never had a bad meal there.

imo the setting by the canal is better than the quality of the food, although I've only ever had one meal there. Wish there were some better italians, including pizza/pasta places which I prefer to highbrow Italian restaurants.

I think a special mention is necessary for Allo Pizza takeaway in Stoke for pizza and pasta, authentic as they're 1st gen Italians and make great takeaway Italian style pizza and pasta

What about the Spotgate Inn near Stone? The restaurant area is some old school train carriages, which is a little different, although I guess that still falls into the same old same old food category. Hector Garcia's in Newcastle is pretty nice food too (Mexican).
