I’m late to the party but I’ve just bought a PS5….Took the PS3 out the rack now what to do with it?

Seems a shame to land fill it?

Charity shop won’t take it…

I suppose I could keep it for Blu-rays but I don’t watch them anymore…

Any ideas?

I thought the PS3 phat models were quite sort after these days due to them natively being able to play PSone and PS2 titles?
Assuming its in full working order you could always take it to the bay or equivilant market. Personally i'd keep it but that's just for the back compat support :)

What do I gain?
Being able to backup all your games as the bluray drives like to fail, faster loading, homebrew, apps like fan control curves so it doesn't sound like a jet engine, trainers/cheat/dev menus, mods, emulators, The ability to flash a firmware that'll remove the working drive even being a requirement to boot etc should it fail, all sorts mate.

Sell it easily. Although the fully backwards compatible models are more sought after it’s still worth some money, as it plays ps1 games with hdmi output. And the catalogue of ps3 titles is massive.

I just purchased a fully backwards compatible model as it seemed the best way to play ps1/2 titles on a modern screen.

You can jailbreak any firmware phat ps3 and play ps2 games on any model even without the emotion engine. Did this with my phat 40gb. So the value isn't really there as the 60/80gb always broke/had problems and everyone seems to have JB'ed them now. It's pretty much a firmware flash off a usb/website just like an official FW update. So everyone does it.

Just reading up….mine is a 80GB phat with 2 x front USB ports….so won’t play ps2 games…I don’t think…

What would be the going rate?

I am subbed to PlayStation Premium + so have access to loads of past generation games…

I bought the PS3 mainly as a Blu-ray player for my home theatre…before streaming became a thing…

Mine is delided hopefully it survives haha. I know they were all ‘capable’ of PS2 games even without the hardware as they used software emulation. Did Sony then decide to turn it off at some point? I can’t recall now.

I see that some people are missing original phats but with the later 65/40nm GPU.

Depends on a few things, is it boxed, any games, controllers, condition…

I don't think that was true mate, the 60/80gb had the 'Emotion Engine' that the PS2 had, so I'm pretty sure it wasn't emulation... It is emulation on the jailbroken method though, yes.

Have you installed the homebrew fan controller addon to the CFW/you can set variables etc etc or just have it static at a certain %. Stops the jet plane.

The original 20gb "CECHBxx" and 60gb "CECHAxx" NTSC models had full hardware compatibility - i.e. a physical PS2 Emotion Engine CPU, Graphics Synthesizer GPU and RDRAM Memory.

The 60gb UK launch model "CECHCxx" removed the Emotion Engine CPU and RDRAM, retaining just the Graphics Synthesizer hardware, and emulating the EE CPU in software.

For the 40/80/160GB Models onwards all dedicated hardware was removed, and PS2 games cannot be played from disc without custom firmware
