Any use for my PS3 Phat 40GB?

Update: It was a 40GB drive in it….I swapped this out for a 250GB SSD I had laying about…I mainly used the PS3 in my home theatre so rarely played games on it….Now I have my PS5 it’s sort of rekindled some interest in gaming….

What are some of the must have games for PS3 ?

Games that defined its power? :D

Uncharted trilogy are a must IMO, Gran Turismo, The Last of Us, Red Dead, Dark Souls…the good thing about PS3 games is most of them are cheap at the moment. It’s great time to be buying them. I got the three Uncharted games boxed with manuals for 9 quid the other day, bargain.

As above, the Uncharted trilogy is a must! That said you can kinda sack the first game off as it is a bit clunky compared to the sequel, I did start with the sequel and finished with the original though so that might play into that...

If you like fighters Tekken Tag 2 is a great game and I believe still has a player base!

I now have an uncontrollable nostalgic urge to buy a fat ps3!!! My super slim won't cut it anymore... ahh memories

My 60gb phat is in a cupboard in the back bedroom, still with the Little Big Planet dvd in it now that I think about it. It had two separate hair dryer repairs before I gave in and got a super slim, which itself only got switched on the other day for the first time in years when I started reminiscing about Final Fantasy XIII, which I then went and bought on PC in the Steam sale :D

I have a phat OG 60GB and a PSX (DVR) in my loft somewhere. Funnily enough last time I tested the PS3 was still running fine (if not very loud) but my PSX has some like weird image problems. Its annoying as Sony machines do seem to have a level of age unreliability that seems to render them useless. Emulation is a godsend for preservation.

She’s had a clean and back in my rack with a new SSD fitted and a new Firmware installed. :)

PS3 is great for heating a small room! It was no coincidence that it was compared to a George Forman Grill!

Oh, and drowning out background noises while playing an Uncharted game. Those fans ramped up.

Oh, and my PS3 is great for playing PS1 games. I have many still, but never play them. Vagrant Story comes to mind.

My Phat 40gb is still going strong. brilliant console and love that it can play PSone and PS2 games. Upgraded mine to a 500gb 2.5" HDD a few years back and just downloaded everything from the last 15+ years i had from PSPlus and Xmas sale purchases.

Nice digital monster retro catalogue :) + i still have a load of my old physical PS3 games which are hard to source now.

@easyrider how well does it work with an SSD, can the system actually make use of the additional speed, wasn't it SATA 2.0?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Works fine with the SSD…Not sure on the SATA bus speeds but it’s about access times with SSD, less heat and noise and failure rate…

I put an SSD in my old Laptop circa 2007 for testing and playing with Linux and it was night and day from the 2.5 mechanical drive

1TB MX500 seems to be the sweet spot…anything bigger the PS3 doesn’t like.

Awesome, cheers.

i think that the drive was a 7200rpm so not slow slow, but still i cant help think an SSD is going to help in some way

Just need to check if you can get away with cloning PS drives or you have to do a full ground up.....

Just use backup utility within PS3

I remember having Motorstorm Pacific Rift, such a fun game with a great sense of speed. You could almost feel those boosts!
I still remember selling my phat PS3 for the slim one, it was so much smaller and considerably lighter. What a classic machine.
