Hey

Just wondered if anybody here was in the fire service, or know of anybody who is in it and can tell me as much as you want about it?
What requirements are there, whats the training like,hours/wage etc...What you do on an average day

thanks

Yes at the moment you need good unaided vision.
Age requiremnts have gone so I think it's just minimum 18 now, height requirements have also gone.

You need to be pretty fit and the recruitment process is very demanding.
I work two 9 hour days followed by two 15 hour nights followed by 4 days off although different Brigades have varying shift patterns.

On an average day we'll start at 9 check the engines and equipment, do a drill or lecture then test equipment and do PT.
Dinner 12.30 - 1.30.
In the afternoon go out check out local buildings in the and area, fit smoke detectors do any visits.
Of course all of this is interupted by fire calls, special services, RTC's infact, the last fourtnight I've been to 3 horrendous RTC's.

I can highly recommend it, I absolutely love it.

Wages, your looking at about 27k for a Firefighter.

My brother trains new recruits for the fire service so I'll get him to post some info when I see him, He loves it, works for 4 days then gets 4 days off, hes in the athletics club in the fire service and has traveled all over the world racing and most of the trips were subsidised. Nice little number if you ask me.

sounds good, what did the recruitment consist of? exams/training etc

Recruitment as in applying was quite an indepth application form, in that I mean 1 spelling mistake and binned, it says please mark every box so even if you fail to at least place N/A in a box then binned.
It says use black ink any other is binned, basically they have so many thousand apply for the jobs, they sift through the papers and bin as many as possible.

Then an exam, followed by ladder climbing and other practical tests.
Confined spaces test Fitness test, interview then medical.

There was about 6000 people apply for 24 jobs when I joined, out of that 18 passed.

Collisions

You can thank the Police for that.
They have told us there are no such things as accidents so now it's to be known as RTC's
Yep :)

accidents are accidents, it implies non fault/blame.
Collisions are fact, there was a collision, simple as.
