Anybody else suffer from OcUD

How is Libre Office different from Open Office? As far as I can tell, they've basically just reskinned it. I only switched to OO on two grounds; firstly it's free rather than a lot of money (chief reason), and secondly, it's faster. What does LO have that's better?

LO is open source OO as OO is now solely run by Oracle and most of the people who were working on OO now work on LO.
And Oracle recently announced they would no longer be supporting it so jump ship now!

I'm starting to use Google docs now, a lot easier since I can use my Android phone to view them :p.

What about the desktop? A mate showed me his desktop today and icons were everywhere! It looked like a mess to me, I like mine minimal and all aligned to the left :(. I also have a habit of ordering every file in different folders...

Icons? On the desktop? Personally I cant stand ANY icons on my desktop. That's what the Win7 bar is for. My sister complained when I used fences to sort out her desktop as she claimed she couldn't find anything . The thing is if my family ask me for help with their computer I will fix everything that does not conform to my ideals of a streamlined experience.
How do people cope with turning on their computer and then CANCELLING every update box that appears every time?
My GF always like to have about 30 tabs open in Firefox and 5-10 PDF files open as well when she is doing work and then complains when her 3 year old laptop crashes and she loses all her work. I have told her that its her fault but she just blames the computer.

What is wrong with some people?

I agree with just about everything that's been said so far.

Whenever I get a computer I always end up doing a massive clear-out and 3 million updates. I just can't help it!

I'm afraid I disagree with you regarding the desktop, whats the point on having one if you put nothing on it? I do split my icons to either side of the screen with games on one side and other stuff on the other.

I have lost many, many hours to OcUD - and you guys are treating it as if it's some kind of joke!?!?!

I've been through every step of the illness, the happy single click fix that turns into the two hour slog of failed updates; the single update that turns out to need 15 other updates beforehand; trying to subtly explain to your boss that the problem wasn't his laptop but was instead his 13 year old son downloading 132 viruses among the 55GB of porn he'd obtained; the 24 hours solid clearing out all the viruses and spyware which all reappeared the next day because "You had removed most of my smileys from Messenger and I needed them back."!!!!!

AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!

So, yes, my name's Stuart, and I'm an OcUD sufferer.

Pretty much every computer I touch, I run all updates that need doing, uninstall the preinstalled McAfee or other anti-virus software whose 30 day free trial ended 3 years ago (biggest pet hate here, massive consumption of RAM and CPU cycles for very little benefit), put MSE on, run some decent cleaning software and tell the owner to use it once in a while, and install Google Chrome. People are amazed at the speed the computer runs, but still refuse to use Google Chrome. ARGH.

Pretty much do exactly the same.

Cleaning out the dust-clogged heatsink of a laptop without an access panel, meaning you have to totally dismantle for access, in front of the owner is always a fun one.

The looks of feigned-disintrest mixed with mild terror 'Its not happening, its not happening!'

And there is always a cheeky screw left over *Slips screw into pocket and whistles*

Well I'm proud to say that I've recovered from the condition. Solution is Will Power! Avoid other systems.

If anyone requests help I usually direct them to forums or tell them to Google it. That way they learn. They never do when someone else does it for them or truely appreciate the effort.

Everytime i visit a friends house and they show me something on their computer system and i see the little 'updates are ready...' icon jiggling in the corner, like a fat petit girl at a party looking for attention, then i check and notice service pack 1 isn't even installed, i die a little inside.

Then one thing leads to another, it starts out with a service pack, swells to updating the graphics drivers and peaks at making sure adobe reader x is installed, not 9 or less.

I think i have a problem :(

Obsessive Compulsive Updating Disorder.

Im the same!

For anyone suffering with Windows 7 SP1 Endless Update Fail Syndrome, I offer two words of warning - Driver Sweeper.

I had used Driver Sweeper after having ATI driver problems, and many sites suggested this app to clear "unwanted" old files prior to a clean install with the latest drivers. However, some of the files it removes are considered essential by M$ (although they are not used!?), so your installation is marked as "corrupt" by the update checker. Annoyingly, it does not tell you which files are missing or why the update failed.

So if you've used Driver Sweeper, and can't update to SP1, this is the most likely cause (I'm sure there are others too). Check the DS website, download the essential files that were deleted, and put them back where they were. You should then be good to go with SP1. (And get the latest version of DS if you plan on using it again).

Who to blame? DS shouldn't be removing "core" system files. But then M$ shouldn't be asking for a reinstall because a few unused files are missing, or should at least tell you why it won't update and which files are missing. So I'd say it was 50/50, coincidentally the number of hours of my life I wasted trying to sort this out.
