I'm starting a new job there next month up in The Outer Hebrides that is, Isle of Lewis or Harris (can't remember which right now) and basically have never been that far north before, not really sure what it's like or what to expect!

I've spoken to my boss on the phone and he says beautiful/scenic/wonderful etc etc but balanced quite dramatically by the dig your own hole style toilets ;)

I'll be up there for 6 weeks at a time doing building work, and taking my mtb for playing in the down time and the camera and the lappy with a truckload of DivX to plough through.

But what else to expect? It looks quiet!!!

/edit, it's also a 700mile drive to work!

It is quiet, filled with sheep and filled with midges.

It is also cold, wet and wind swept.

Its sort of like Scotland only there is nobody there!

Would I ever go back.....HELL NO!!

When the weather is good and you don't mind the bleak outdoors it can be beautiful and therapeutic for the soul. Usually find the the local pub is the hub or everything, and you can meet some real characters. I spent 10 weeks mapping on Skye in the middle of no-where, looking back now I realise how great it was!

enjoy

Hopefully the weather won't be to bad, some supposed Gulf Stream and the fact it's and island keeps it comfortably above frosty most of the time apparently.

But will there be net/mobile signal? Guy told me vodafone works, darn typical I just switched to T-Mobile :(

You should blatantly go fishing! Then add pics to this thread!

the dude has his own boats and lobster pots!

small problem I don't actually really like seafood? But If I did the whole catching thing and then cooking thing I'd definitely eat it all for the experience!

Gotta use the boats and lobster pots! I'd be loving that. Well even if you don't like fish or seafood, I'm sure there are other nice things to eat there. Also definately should take the boats out for a little spin/sightsee and photo session. cap it off by having a BBQ in a deserted place!
