Anyone been to Malta?

I'm thinking of going on cheap summer holiday with the girlfriend and Malta seems to fit the bill so far. I was just wondering if anyone had been and what they thought? Any advice on places to stay, things to do, sights to see etc. would be much appreciated. Valletta looks interesting so far. We're hoping to go in mid July to guarantee some sun!

I know it's in the Euro, but how cheap/expensive is it once you're there?
 
We go every year. Always stay in the Corinthia Palace Hotel which is superb and close enough to town and beaches. It's walking distance to the harbour with restaurants, boat trips and a few clubs. Mostly we just chill next to the pool with the odd excursion. We're going in July as well which is piping hot.
 
Dont go there expecting a lively holiday, plenty of history if that floats your boat (and plenty of them to!).
Buses are cheap to get around, food and drink are reasonably priced.

Santa Lucia (sp?) was really busy and full of women when we went :D

Went with my Family and a mate when I was 16 (it was free so we thought sod it). Best way we could describe it was 'an old peoples home in the sun'.

Not been since but it does seem a very relaxed, slow paced kind of country. Popular with the oldies because English is the second (almost first in some areas) language. Some nice architecture and historical points to see though.
 
They drive on the left so great if you hire a car, can see much more and going to Gozo I think, island to the left is good as on outing. :)
 
I've only ever been there for work in my old role. However from the times I've been there I've always had a wonderful time, enjoyed the people and the culture. The weather's always been fantastic when I've been there too. :) It fits my Mediterranean lifestyle quite nicely! :D

Lots of history and culture to learn about - but also a lot of good activities, like scuba, snorkelling, sailing and cycling around the island is a great bit of adventure. :)
 
Went there once a few years ago with a friend, can't remember exactly where but it was on the left of the island.

Decent enough place, but seemed to have too many English people and English type pubs.

Sounds perfect. We're not into clubbing etc. and very much want to avoid English pubs/clubs/people :p

So where are all the sights to see? The Corinthian Palace Hotel looks nice but probably out of our price range. What's it near?

Also, I take it there's no real beaches to speak of?
 
There are 2 sandy beached iirc, both man made and can get rather busy, the rest of the island is pebbled shore line.
Couldn't tell you any specific names of places to visit im afraid :)
 
In Malta they drive in the shade, not left or right.

Valletta is expensive to stay in generally, as a rule of thumb i tend to stay in St Pauls / Bugibba. St Julians & St Georges are nice but small, Sliema is a nice place but can attract a lot of ze germans.

Lovely beaches include golden sands, meliah bay, marsaxlokk bay, visit popeye village, rabat, dinghi, boat trip to gozo, blue lagoon etc
 
check out Gozo (smaller island about 30 min ferry to) & valetta, both really nice places. there's a animal world type place we went to last time i was there, they do dolphin shows :)
 
Went about 7 years ago, nice and quiet and hot enjoyed it and would defo go back.

Hotel we stayed in said it had a pool on the roof turned out more like a large fish pond.

Strange a lot of cars had the night rider lights on the front don't know what that was all about.
 
Another recomendation for the Corinthia Palace, though the SAS Radisson and the Hilton are also good places to stay.
 
If you want to get on the beaches with just a short walk, head over to Xemxija Bay and follow the coast around to Golden Bay and try to get a hotel around there, or around that part of the coastline as Valetta, Sliema etc are very rocky.

Another hotel i enjoyed was the Selmun Palace, a bit out of the way, but the right end of the island for the beaches.

Driving is easy, but as it will be a rental car it will probably have a different type of licence plate (think they have Q's in them) and the locals will quite happily try to run you off the road whilst trying to overtake 3 abreast on a single track road......... :D if you do hire a car and have an accident, take pictures straight away and insist that the police are called (that's the advice i got from my mates dad who is in the police over there) and whilst you are at it also phone the hire company straight away and they will usually send someone out to you also.
