Looking to purchase one of these new AMD Phenom 9700's after Christmas, has any one built a system with one of these CPU's, looking to see what the retail heatsink and fan looks like, and how well it cools...Any pics ;)

Motherboard I am looking to purchase...

I am guessing if you use your PC for games more than crunching numbers/programming/Vid editing, then 4 gpu's might be better even if the CPU is slightly slower. Most games are GPU limited anyway not CPU limited (well at higher rez anyway).

But personally I will probably go Intel next upgrade (which is v.soon).

I see it this way.

If everyone buys Intel, AMD will go bust. Then Intel can charge what they like & the era of £2k entry level PC's will come back, like it was when I bought my 1st PC (486SX 33) back in late 1993. Not keen on seeing those days coming back somehow.

To be honest, even if AMD does go bust, it's not like Intel is the only other company capable of producing silicon based tech...

Sorry but that is just misguided loyalty. You buy the best components you can afford at the time regardless of manufacturer. At this time and for the foreseeable future that is Intel. It's not as if AMD will show you any loyalty back. AMD's main money is from the server market, not the enthusiast market.

im wondering that too when intel is cheaper and faster clock for clock.
guess someone has to buy them.

thats not true and you know it. the price on overclockers and a few other main stream sites is 26% higher than the standard retail price for these chips. at their proper price they are 13.6% cheaper and 13.5% slower clock for clock than their equivalent Intel's.

I will upgrade sometime next year and will seriously consider AMD. Yes, they are slower, and need to replace the SB600 chip, but I think they will be seriously overclockable, and I have a feeling that when the system is complete, an AMD CPU, board and gpu all together will possibly have some big benefits that haven't been realised yet.
I will admit Im guessing, but with all the development time put in, I cant believe that the poor performance issues now will last, but who knows....

But what % of the PC market are Enthusiasts, I would have thought it would make the difference between AMD profit & loss

Well it is true as going my overclockers prices he phenom is more expensive than the Q6600.

Standard retail price means nothing if you can't get it for that price.

im interested in this too, could someone compile a list of people who bought phenom systems? im running out of people to take the micky out of.
the guys who bought the 2900xt now have sold it so its been a booring month. :(

:) :D

There is some serious stuff going on in Xtreme Systems AMD section.
Looks like Phenom may have a Bite after all.

is in a way, enthusiasts tell friends and family to stay away from AMD as performance is naff, they buy intel & the circle goes on by them telling others

ALl the money is in the pcs you will see in work places where amd will sell billions of cheap AMD single cores to power then. Also there is a lot of money in the servesr which amd aims all its new cpus at first it seems.
