Anyone Built a AMD *Phenom* System :o)

To be honest, even if AMD does go bust, it's not like Intel is the only other company capable of producing silicon based tech...

If you remember the pre-AMD (as a genuine competitor) days you'd think so.

A Pentium 200MHz remained Intel's top spec general user chip for a very long time in 1996-1997 (after the earlier Pentiums had blown most all other competition away), once the K5 and then K6's appeared it made Intel up their game massively.

Same with Graphics cards after the fall of Voodoo.

Competition drives the market without it the pace of technology does (and has) significantly slow.

im interested in this too, could someone compile a list of people who bought phenom systems? im running out of people to take the micky out of.
the guys who bought the 2900xt now have sold it so its been a booring month. :(

:) :D
i have a MSI K9A2 Platinum which is a great motherboard and yes im gonna get a phenom next year, hopefully the higher phenom will be out by then...

i also have a 2900 which im keeping till the next gen ati cards come....

The 9500 HSF is a pretty basic alu job. It is not even got the heat pipes of the x2 6000+ HSF. Then again its a lot cooler :D

I am water cooling mine as it's in my HTPC. Even with orthos (2 threads) the reserator XT is only about 2C above ambient (and therefore quite). Unfortunately Core Temp doesn't work on Phenoms so I cannot check how hot it its getting.

Sorry Mav but this still applies.

I think you'd be the first to moan if Intel had the market to themselves and you ended up paying ridiculous prices.

Never mind.. :( you should be able to sell your intel and use the money to buy a Phenom..;)

I've been with AMD since I started building PCs 8 years ago. Was soooo tempted over the Phenom but finally after all this time went for Intel.
Whether or not that was the right decision, I don't know. Have to say I'm eagerly reading Phenom performance threads lately.

thats not true and you know it. the price on overclockers and a few other main stream sites is 26% higher than the standard retail price for these chips. at their proper price they are 13.6% cheaper and 13.5% slower clock for clock than their equivalent Intel's.

But once we start overclocking (like we do because we're on overclockers) the C2D/C2Q, esp with Penryn coming up kicks AMDs backside.

Wait for Penryn.

Yepo.

I dont understand why Intel / AMD dont bundle coolers like the AC 7 Pro / AC 64 Pro.

They prolly cost the same as them retail heatsink but are way way better.

For them to buy an adequate cooler that does exactly what they need it to it probably costs them £2 a heatsink or $4. Bundle it with an AC7 or whatever and you're going to add £10-15 onto the retail price. And for the vast majority of people it won't make any difference.because they will fit the heatsink and never change it, never overclock the computer, etc.

Believe it or not, there are some people who don't even know what the inside of a computer looks like, let alone care whats in their case. As such, why would AMD bother? Why would Intel bother trying to provide something better than the stock cooler when it works just fine?

bassed on current trends Nvidia's current gen cards will be faster than ATI's next gen:p
we don't know for sure that the next gen ati card will be slower/faster than current nivdia cards / next gen card... because theres no prove at this time. your just bassing it on current cards.

even if it is slower it doesn't matter to me tbh. ill still buy one if the price is right..

i understand what your saying but he was not on about overclocking, he was talking clock for clock. its quite clear he was slating a product unfairly by posting information about it, i.e. that its more expensive than its intel equivalent. This just simply is not true, there are a few suppliers that for what ever reason, have decided to cash in and sell the AMD chip 26% above the rrp that it can actually be bought for, as i have said before its not for me to question why as i am not a large pc parts supplier.

Others have posted info that simply is not true and then have been comparing it to the competitions next gen product. Again, late or not, this is not a fair comparison at present as phenom was built to compete against its 65nm intel rival. Also penryn and 45nm tech are not on our shelves yet and when they do appear i doubt they will be at an acceptable price for a some time after.

nvidia have the winning design right now. All they ahve to do is add to it, ati's design doesn't seem to good. The 2900 was a failure with stats that on paper were better then the G80s but in games failed.

The 3870 is still not a lot faster but it is a lot cooler and quieter and usese a lot less power. So they must ahve made quite a few changes. But really they ened to come up with something new to beat the 9800 i recon. Needs a new design to get back in the game.

Dont buy in hurry or rushing.... just wait cos there will be new more AM2+ motherboard after Xmas that included new Nvidia MCP 72, MCP76 and MCP78 chipset and then next year new Socket AM3 with DDR3 and will using new SATAIII-600 hard drive --- I rather wait until next year as Im keeping my AM2 just now - remember 12 months run so fast than we thought, is it?? I rather save some money first then decide what to do next.

uli chipset was crap which now known as Nvidia Mxxxxx chipset. i hope the Nvidia MCP72, MCP76 and MCP78 chipset will be better...

but im glad i brought the MSI K9A2 Platinum . it overclocks my cpu very well..
