Anyone else busted their ACL

The swelling is just wrong though, when I stand up I can feel fluid dribbling down inside my calf. I am using my cyro cuff regually. regarding my bandages I have removed them yesterday and just have a compression bandage on and plasters over the incisions. When walking (with crutches) my kneecap feels wobbly due to all the fluid.

Lol - I am feeling like a fat lazy swine so I thought what excercise can I do on the sofa without working up a sweat (can't really shower at the moment) so I searched for slendertone and found a thread by you when you were sofa bound. I still could be tempted though as even if it strenghens my adbs by 5% it will help with posture and hence walking.

when did you start taking glucosamine?

Well I gotta say I never had any of that fluid moving around in my knee calf feeling!!

Don't bother with slendertone it's a worthless piece of poop!!

Just keep up with the cuff and keep that leg raised!! Personally I had a couple of issue with some liquid on my knee and basically the os just sucked a load of liquid off it with a nice big syringe, then add some steroids which have done the trick!!

Got my physio app on Tuesday so I'll see about getting an app with the OS to get some fluid off if its still sloshing around (my ankle has bruised due to fluid/blood settling down there).

He won't do anything until at least 8 or so weeks in as you need time to get the inflamation down first!

I had massive brusing in fact i was staggered at the amount I had as exhibit A here shows

Taken about a week post op!

How did your appointment go with the OS, is the recovery still on track.

Yup went very well - i'm now ab le to hop side to side and forwards and backwards! He only wants to see me once more in about 2/3 months time! So he's very pleased as am I! Even managed to play a bit of lightbeaqch footie this weekend !! Just a little stiff today but no pain!!

At least I should be able to squat and do some deadlifts in the gym now!!!

Hows recovery your end??

I have my first visit to the OS tomorrow pre op so hopefully he will say that everything is in order. The strength is slowly coming back and I can now do a few step ups and I am walking without crutches in the house but with one out the house.
The physio is fairly impressed as well with progress.
I can now balance on one leg. My leg does feel very stiff in the morning and I do a bit of cycling to loosen it up.

I have started doing open chain hamstring excercises at the physio last week and the first time I did one I cold only get to about 10 degress, it was so poor that I couldnt stop laughing. My hamstring did feel a tad tight and painful though and after looking at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2213495095992504423&hl=en‏ I can understand why.

Apple corer to the hamstring technique.

So how's things going mate! OS happy with you?

Made my debut on the football pitch last week albeit in goal and seemed to come through ok ! A little stupid as it's too early but it's 5 a side so no contact with outfield players. Found the movement very good and twisting about seemed ok so all in all it seems to be good! I actually think it was good for the knee to get some more real world movement!

I'm also running about 2 miles 2/3 times a week and want to get to a comfortable 10 before I play outfield again!

I'm hoping I might be able to resume defensive duties sometime in August.

I've also noticed a stange but really positive outcome from all the physio work and this is going to sound really stupid. Before my injury the soles of my shoes used to get wern down at the back but on the outer side, now the wear is almost even (what I would call normal) so I'm wondering if I've somehow sorted out some sort of imbalance!! Weird!!

I'm off in tomorrow for reconstruction of both the ACL and PCL.

MCL is also a grade 3 tear but that will apparently not require surgery.

Surgeon said he expects me to be back playing football in between 6-9 months.

Hope hes right, gives me a target to go for anyway.

How did you guys find the physio after the op as its supposed to be quite gruelling.

Good luck with the operation pal! Physio is more frustrating than gruelling as you have to start with very basic excercises and you wonder what the point is!! BUT PERSEVERE! I cannot stress how crucial this stage is!

I've had to duck out of physio for the last 4 weeks due to work commitment but have been looking after myself down the gym! I also completed my first decent challenge last thursday by running in the JP Morgan Run in Battersea it's only 3.5 miles I think but managed it in just under 30 mins which aint bad for someone who hasn't ran in almost a year! Knee was fine after thAt too just ever so slightly stiff which I expected but no swelling or anything like that! Seeing the physio again this wed and will ask when I should be playing football again.... I've always mentally set a date for August and I'm hoping I'll pull that off if so that will be about 7 months post op!

Pablo how often was your physio, after mine last Tuesday (7 weeks post op) my next appointment isn't for 3 weeks. When did you stop walking with a limp?

This session this week was the best yet and the hardest by a long way! Loads of trampoline work and hopping sounds basic but was f'ing knackering! Began first football specific stuff aswell angled shuttle runs, zig zags etc etc more tramp work then had to run hop and land and stop on my operated knee! Amazed it didn't fall apart to be honest! lol!

Sprinting with ease now too which is a bonus so just need to work on my fitness before I get back onto the pitch!

As for the limp I was probably about 2.5/3 months in before I felt entirely comfortable walking and more importantly running without issue!

I'm about a week post op now and have another question.

I am up and walking about without crutches since 5 days post op.

There is however a large amount of swelling on the upper part of my knee.
I've been icing and raising above level of the heart but wondering if I am expecting miracles considering timescale.

Also the leg is very stiff and I'm finding it difficult to do the excercises that the physio specified.

The leg that was harvested for the hamstring tendon graft is almost back to normal already.

Just wondering if anybody has had these experiences.:)

The swelling stays for quite sometime mate I'm afraid! Some good tips from oneilldo though especially sleeping with your leg raised - feels weird but you'll soon get used to it!

Good luck

I managed an hour of 11 a side last Tuesday and I'm over the moon! Was bricking it at first but knee felt ok and it took a few challenges too.

Following day was chuffed to feel no pain and there was no swelling! Still working it harder in the gym now and hoping to play again next Tuesday for the full 90 mins! Fingers crossed.

I'm now 6.5 months post op - have got to book an appointment with my OS next month at some time so will be interesting what he says

Hope everyone else is recovering well

A couple of rather bad pictures taken from my game last week for my works team against Deloitte the Accountants. First pic - me taking a sliding tackle from behind 2nd Pic warm up before going on!! lol .....To those who are coming back to sports get a sports brace - my one was fantastic! Was grateful for that tackle as it gave me the confidence to play much better afterwards!

Still doing ok - but have been playing more 5 a side in goal rather then out field. Going to give outfield a miss for a while as it's too fast for my knee at the moment.

Going to see my specialist on Tuesday so will hopefully go well. Physio still going strong too - can't believe i'm almost 8 months post op!

Time flies past far to fast!

Going to see the surgeon on 7th Nov to talk about ACL reconstruction and what not.

Well worth it at least for the discussion with your surgeon alone. You just need to be up front about what you want to do in the future!

I was 100% adament I was going to play football again and albeit with a bit of luck I'm doing exactly that now which is fantastic!

Good luck mate!

At the moment i am busy doing quad curls and hamstings curl things to strenghten the two, which will help post op.

This is crucial - You must build you knee up as best you can pre op becuase the muscle wastage post op is staggering!- Do Squats in your routine and use a Gym ball behind your back and a wall for support as doing a full squat without said support is probablynot a very good idea! I know the following is aimed at pregnant women but this is what I mean (and all I could find to illustrate!) - http://www.expertvillage.com/video/653_pregnancy-exercise-ball-squat.htm just in case my description wasn't very clear! As you get better carry some heavy dumbells whilst doing the exercise itself!

Good luck with it and hang in there!

i damaged the meniscus Cartilage in my right knee twice last year playing football, which luckily didn't need surgery. i've had physio on it and the strength vertically through the knee is strong as i can run, cycle, lift weights etc but weight that puts any force horizontally through the knee its still pretty weak. for example im right footed but i played a lot on my left so if a play a pass or shot that requires rotation of my right knee it really doesn't like it and i can feel unnerving movements in the knee. i need to slowly exert more through it to strengthen the muscle again before i can really feel i can rely on my once dependable knee.

MW

Be very careful with cartilage if you **** that the knee is pretty much history!

Good to see more positive outcomes :). 3 and a bit years since doing mine it's still as good as ever! It sure is a tough process but worth it in the end!

If anyone has any questions feel free to email me :)
