Anyone else do this?

I dont have many games anyway I usually play 'annual' franchises as well, which means the last one gets dumped off.

ie FM or NBA 2K they both just stay as the new version and the old ones uninstalled, along with any mods etc deleted.

Other than that, I keep some games on there ... ive not long had this machine so dont have a ton on the SSD, but wont clog that with junk either.

- which reminds me to remove NBA 2K11 as im done with that as the new one is due soon.

Normally I only uninstall a game if:

1) I have completed it
2) I have a disk to reinstall it from (i.e. not Steam)

I also port my games drive between computer rebuilds (and between drives when the time comes too!), so I've actually got some games that have technically been 'installed' for around 10 years or more (Quake, Diablo 2, Motorhead, Quake 3, Red Alert 2...).

In terms of Steam I have nearly everything installed, this is because you have to download games which can take hours and I can only download 15GB/month between 8am and 8pm on weekdays (unlimited outside those hours). So I've got 242 Steam games installed at the moment

Worth noting that some of the these games I have installed I haven't played in years, in fact when it comes to the Steam titles probably at least half of them I haven't even played once and likely will never get time to. I just like to have them there ready to go like the OP though, a nice stockpile in case I get made redundant or whatever.

What I'm tending to do these days with retail games is install them to SSD and then uninstall when complete (only have a 60GB drive), in some ways this is good because it gives me an incentive to grind out the completion rather than ditching a game halfway through or whatever.

Why dont people just uninstall if they ahve them on Steam?

I mean you can keep your downloaded mods etc - but its easy enough to download the game again, well it is on a 50mb line :p

Because you can't play them if they're not installed. :)

Got a 100mb line and still have everything installed. Disk pace is dirt cheap these days.

I have a ~5mbit line which means about 2GB/hour assuming full speed downloads. That means probably around 2-5 hours of downloading per game. Plus realistically I can only download in offpeak hours due to being capped.

To be honest, even if I had a fast connection I would still leave uncompleted games installed because you never know if for some reason your connection might go down.

I've just about filled my 500Gb HD with primarily games, I like the idea of keeping them all in a ready to play state because every now and then I just get a hankering to play a game I have not played in ages or maybe new DLC or a mod comes out and I fancy giving it a go.

Last night I ordered a Crucial M4 SSD which will be for OS and games like BF3 MW3 e.t.c. and a 2TB HDD for everything else. I got some reading to do before the stuff gets here Saturday. The 2TB i went for was a low consumption WD cavier Green which has slower RPM than my 500GB Samsung F3 so a bit worried this might actually be slower for gaming as this is where I need to stick games like Shogun 2 which I don't play often but is a bit more demanding than most.

I've got my whole collection on a WD Caviar Green. I wouldn't worry if I were you. :)

If you find a game where you really need the quick loading, move it to your SSD. I've never found myself ripping my hair out with impatience though. ;)

It is very rare that you actually *NEED* a fast hd for gaming anyway since:

1) The main effect is improved loading times, which don't affect actual gameplay (multiplayer games that start the second you enter the map aside)
2) Modern hds are fine anyway, certainly much faster at loading than consoles.

Yeah never had an issue with my 500gb hdd but just thought i would treat myself with the ssd. I plan to run my SSD lean so only MP games that i play a lot BF3 and MW3 most likely

Yep, got a couple 'games' HDDs chock full of all my games old and new, all neatly organised. If I get the urge to play Dead Island I can, or if I fancy some Doom 2, I can boot that up too! Their like my 'games libraries' on HDD.

HI,

Well ... I was used to do it, had about 50 games installed, however started to uninstall them after I haven't played most of them for 5+ months, I still have about 20 installed: space marine, hard reset, MW2, crysis 1/2, witcher 2, left4dead 1/2, mass effect, dirt 2/3, grid, dead island, metro 2033, medal of honer, SF4, fifa 11, dragon age 1/2, DOW: retribution,..etc... and even this list is almost untouched.

All installed on separate hdd 500gb (WD black)

hmmm.. might look into investing in another drive but not keen on downloading files again.
Does the backup feature allow me to move the game files without causing link issues?
