Because it is not that simple. The FireGL drivers are purely optimized for 3DS Max work and Maya etc. Cards for modelling work that the games industry use. Gaming on the other hand is a different issue.
well, look at that, the card can either run opengl slow and run other games at normal speed, or it can sacrifice performance in all other games to speed up opengl games.
not a good end result in any case.

well i posted the benchmarks showing the difference between the x1950pro and 7600gt, dunno where you pulled out 2900 stuff from since thats clearly not the issue here,

are you going to be running the 2900 from the lcdtv? is it one that has a rez of 1360x768? if so your x1900xt shoudl handle that rez easily, i use a x1950pro agp to do 1360x768 on my lcdtv and it does work very well even in newer games. the rez is not very demanding at all.
if you have 1900x1080 then its a different story and 2900 will deffo be better suited for the task.
I have a Viewsonic P225F series which is capable of 2048x1536 @ 79Hz and a 22" BenQ FP222W a. I don't like LCD screens for online FPS gaming as LCD isn't quick enough for my eyes, (Cod1, Cod2 and CSS) so I use the Viewsonic for that and the LCD for most other things. I do not mind lowering down the resolutions to get playability. I'm sure at 1360x768 or 1440x900 I was getting great FPS at max settings on Bioshock with my current card although I didn't force any AA or AF (AA - not sure about it being able too?).
The reasons I want to upgrade is upcoming titles Crysis and Colin Mcrae DiRT as when I tried on Ultra settings before it was a blooming slideshow lol (don't know what res). I tried it, seen the game crawl and removed it. I paid £220 for this XT August 2006 so £50 less for an improvement looks very tempting, This card will hold me over until the GTX's successor arrives.

And on OT, Will posted up results of his card not so long ago and they were in line with everyone else who has a 2900 so unless something has dramatically changed since then, your system is fine.
yes dirt really hit my performance badly. and crysis was buggy like mad, but will have to wait for final release to see how it is.
i thought it was just me that noticed slowness and ghosting effects on tft/lcd's i do find thier response speeds too slow for gaming really. although its always fun to play on a bigger screen.

He only posted this afternoon Mav, and stated that he talk to the guy that was helping him when he got back from college. This isn't MSN, and some people can't be on it 24/7 to reply.
I'm still waiting for Will to state precisely what the problem is though rather than just state 'crappy'.

ok so they managed to sort out the 2900 opengl performance but has this new driver model been applied to the lower range cards like x1k series?
the release noted show lots of improvements but vista only.
and the latest benchmark iv seen was for quake wars using driver 7.9 from firingsquad:

New to catalyst but disabled application decides for AA and AF, set to the maximum of 8x and 16x
Quake - all options except ambient lighting (as I think this is for lower spec systems)
Ultra 1280 x 1024
Made a Demo approx 2 mins long on hardest mode and over 20 kills so plenty of action
Ignored the first result as it's always low while the system caches
Next 3 runs 99.3 98.6 99.2
I did note an odd stutter during play etc but this was generally related to disk access at key points eg doors when moving within section of the level.

Min 30 Max 63 Average 55
The game seems to be capped at about 60FPS even though timedemo function will allow it to run faster.

hmm decto, I'm guessing Quake 4 is on par actually, I will try later, I need to re install Windows first since I almost detroyed windows trying to get AOL radio on.
So was the benchmark with fraps done with 16xAA?
I did not reply for ages coz I was at college, and there is only so much time I can spend on the internet in class when doing work, and I got home and decided to do some bicycling in the soaking wet, so I'm on now, I'll re install Windows, then do some benchmarks, no college tomorrow obviously so got plenty of time.

Both runs were done with the same settings using CAT 7.9 XP
Timedemo seems to run without any frame restriction
In game seems capped to 60 even with vsync off and CCC set to vsync off
I'm just fighting CAT 7.10 which bombed the CCC. I'll let you know if 7.10 is any better.
