Anyone else hate installing ram?

Never had a problem installing RAM. I remember my first time when one work experience where I installed 4 X 256K SIMMS lol.

As I recall, weren't SIMMs easier, didn't you more place them in at an angle and then straighten them up and the clipped in? Which didn't require so much pressure.

Or am I thinking of something else?

No you're right with the angle then click but they were about 1/4 the size of modern RAM and sometimes tricky to click into place. Either way current RAM isn't difficult to install.

Never have much bother with RAM, it's CPU's that make me panic when I'm pushing the clips down.

Pff, back in the days of Socket A was more worrying. I had to use a long flathead screwdriver to bend the heatsink clip onto the socket hooks it was so hard. Nowadays it's all more easier :)

If I'm installing the Intel HSF then I always try to do it before mounting the motherboard, that way I can press on the back of the board while pressing the clips to make it not bend so much.

If anything I worry about snapping the ram, sometimes when pressing down it sways to the side under pressure. Need longer slide guides imo.

i always find having your thumb on the ends (as oppose to the middle of the stick) and pushing each side down one after the other, if i do it at the same time it feels like a lot more force required

I do this as well, have never needed to push it that hard.

I guess I worry occasionally about the pressure, I have more issue removing GPU's though, spent a good 5 minutes once wondering why my GPU wouldn't come out to realise I'd forgotten to unclip it..

I've done that, but I've also tried taking out a graphics card still attach to a monitor. :O Usually I'm pretty good at disconnecting all the relevant cables but occasionally I get careless, especially if I'm trying to diagnose a problem that's annoying me.

As for memory, I don't like my current motherboard. It only has clips on one side of the memory. When I added 8GB the other day I found that even though I'd tried to push it in thoroughly the side without the clip was ever so slightly out of the socket. A simple push fixed it but that would never have happened with clips at both ends.

It's usually the massive bend of the motherboard that gets me... Really wish they'd put the slots nearer one of the screws/spacers/bracers so it's actually got some support, cos sometimes I suspect I'm touching the back plate :S

Theres this, and I still dont know why there isnt a universal heatsink mounting system, certainly across socket types or brands, built onto the board already, you could quite easily do it.

...you mean like AMD has that plastic wossit to attach heatsinks to?

Or even the simple 4 hole Intel stuff?

You're actually meaning third party coolers. The stuff intel and amd gives you fits on very easily to their boards.

So why would they change their boards at significant expense so that 0.001% of users can more securely clamp a 2kg stack of copper fins to the board.

Yes, I've always hated installing ram, especially when you are upgrading just the ram as normally in this instance, the PC will be fully assembled with board inside the case.

It can be very awkward getting the old sticks out and then pushing new sticks in with the often, insane amount of force required, also handling sticks without heatspreaders is a nightmare as it's almost impossible not to touch the ram chips which can damage them, lets face it not many of us wear antistatic wrist straps these days when handling components, or is that just me?

Yeah sitting CPUs in place is much more frustrating than ram. If you install ram quite a few times you can get a hang of it but CPUs oh lord :/

CPUs were fine when pins were on the chip! :P

CPU heatsinks... now that's another matter. Geez, some of them before there was the nice plastic mount surrounding the socket were terrifying. Actually had to lie the case down and lean on the damn thing to get the clip over those little plastic lugs!
