Anyone else have the boss using video cameras at there work to watch them

At my work place we have cameras setup all over the place so the boss can kept an eye on us from his home....

There even one in the lunch room so he can check we don't take longer then 10minutes for lunch

Does seems a bit odd/paranoid of the boss - but then again not much different to having the boss in the office and it being open plan.

I work in an open plan office - big glass atrium - kitchen, break area can be seen from my desk - my boss sits amongst the team rather than in a separate office - we don't have cameras or anything like that but in reality my situation isn't any different to yours - my boss can keep an eye on the team even more so than yours can sitting at home with his cameras etc... doesn't bother me really as everyone in the team gets along quite well and we generally have a lot of banter.

I swear the law is that you have half an hour for lunch.

Depends what your hours are

Taken from the hse website:

Rest breaks at work

A worker is entitled to an uninterrupted break of 20 minutes when daily working time is more than six hours. It should be a break in working time and should not be taken either at the start, or at the end, of a working day.

I thought using CCTV on your workers is illegal.

IN FACT, I remember Spie coming on these forums and telling us that he suspected somebody was stealing but he could only turn the cameras on when everybody had gone home.

Perhaps the laws have changed since then.

Not that I know, my company just used cctv to prove staff were breaking there contract, they were fired and all there appeals have failed, so I'd assume that cctv can be used

I don't think that's so bad. Could you use them in your proper lunch break?

No, can't use them during personal time at all whilst on the premises. The minute you enter the building, your mobile has to be off regardless of when your shift begins or whatever personal/unpaid time you have.

It's just petty and ridiculous, implemented for no reason other than a means to control staff. From senior management to regional sales to lower level management, they're all power happy control freaks.

My entire workplace is under surveillance 24/7, apart from toilets and a few cubbyholes that weren't considered worth covering. There are dozens of cameras - some fixed view, some on random sweeps, some controlled by management. If it is illegal, that law is frequently ignored.

I have around 12 cctv cameras pointing at my bench that pretty much anyone in the company can access, everywhere except the toilets is covered even every inch outside even a good few hundred meters down the road.

What is it you do/work as?

At work my every movement is tracked...every input recorded and exactly how I do my job logged. They also record every word I say both to customers and to colleagues!

I don't get ANY lunch break, nor break at all. I'm required to work any day of the year apart from Xmas day and work hours that would make most people cry.

Meh doesn't bother me! :D
