Anyone else in the process of giving up smoking?

So last night I had my last smoke. I'm not that heavy a smoker, probably 20 - 25 a day but this is the longest time I have gone without smoking in a long time.

I'm using patches at the moment and they seem to take most of the stress away from not smoking which is good. I'm determined to give up this time. I sit down to do something and within 20 minutes I have to go outside to smoke so I just end up wasting so much time because of that and also I spend somewhere between £300 and £400 a month on smoking which is just ridiculous. I could get some really nice computer hardware in no time if I stopped completely. So that is my goal. If I manage to stop properly I'll treat myself when I buy my new computer :).

Anyone else trying to give up smoking?

I've never tried smoking, not even held a lit cigarette... It seems like one of the most insane things a person can do.

I do however wish you all the best, it sounds bloody difficult to be quite honest, I hope you stick at it - save that cash and buy yourself something awesome every 6 months as a treat :D

Good luck :)

Nice one dude! Best of luck to you!

Been off the ciggies for almost 11 months now thanks to vaping. Smoked for almost 10 years prior to that and it's the only thing that's ever helped. If you're having real trouble give it a go!

Get some nicotine gum (ice flavour tastes normal, others taste minging) when the patches aren't enough. I did patches and chewed gum too if I still got a craving and doing this I found giving up easy. Ask for 24 hour patches rather than the others too as then you don't get a 'crash'. Quit over 4 years ago and haven't looked back.

Tried myself numerous times in the last 4 months but just cannot do it. A friend suggested something called Champix which I'm going to try but getting an appointment at a stop smoking clinic is harder than quitting itself!

I weaned myself down to one smoke before bed and then replaced that with a patch before bed. Not through the night though just for 30 mins or so and then took it off. I found it to be a surprisingly easy process.

Good luck man.

I was in the same boat this time last year, ive never had much luck with the patches etc, but fingers crossed it does the job for you.

If it gets too hard why not consider dropping by the vapers lounge, i promised myself if i couldnt quit "normally" then i'd switch to vaping, and the last ciggarrete i had was over 6 months ago got halfway through thought "this tastes like ****" and threw it in the bin alongside the rest of the packet.

Thanks for all the well wishes. I just did a Google search on nicotine gum and they seem to have a lot more flavours than when I tried to give up last time. All I remember about nicotine gum was it tasted god awful. I think I got the original flavour ones though so that might well explain it. Will try and get some just to ease the pain a little bit more when it gets difficult :).

I've picked it back up after splitting from the Mrs but now at the point where I'm fed up with smoking. A colleague at work had a surplus box of gum, which he's donated to me. I had my last smoke around 1600 yesterday and was OK till about 10am when I lost patience with an issue at work. Subsequently went and purchased some.

I'll keep going on the gum this weekend but going to the pub tonight and gum isn't going to cut it lol

Yea they do taste rank, apart from the Ice one. That's what I found anyway.

At the risk of sounding cheesy, you can do it! and you will kick yourself when you realise how easy it was in reality.

I'll give vaping another try if I can't manage with just patches and gum. Hopefully I'll be able to slowly start coming off all the nicotine aids in a month or two and then hopefully I'll forget about it completely.

Thanks :). Yeah for a month or two's worth of discomfort it is well worth it in the long run. Plus my lungs feel awful whenever I do any exercise so hopefully I'll be able to be fitter in the long run as well.

Patches didn't work for me, but Vaping did.

Went from 20+ a day to zero about 4 years ago now.

If the will power is there, then you'll find something that works for you - Good Luck :)

Its a balancing act, i'd advise not to oush yourself too hard, but then that could well be what works for you. Just go at your own pace and if it gets too hard then dont be feared to go back to a stronger patch/gum, itll be better in the long run than failing.

What worked for me was smoking at home and forcing myself to vape at work, after a while i started vaping at home when it was raining etc and i couldnt be bothered going outside.

If you do end up going down the vaping route the key is to get good juice and good kit, those cheap ones petrol stations sell arent worth the time of day imo. The guys on here wont steer you wrong.

If you're struggling to quit get Champix from your doctor and keep smoking while you take the tablets. I smoked for over 20 years and gave up using champix. Easiest thing I've ever done. After 12 days on the tablets I lit up and I really couldn't face a ciggy. That was the last time I smoked. no cold turkey or anything, just keep smoking as normal until you can't face a ciggy, due to the effects of Champix.

What worked for me is to just stop.

I tried vaping etc but just found I'd end up back on the cigs.

Just stop cold turkey and tell your brain to do one when you get cravings.
