Anyone else in the process of giving up smoking?

I have never understood why anyone would want to smoke  Never even touched one myself.

Good on you for wanting to quit though, good luck with it.

I quit maybe 6 months ago

I just went cold turky. I've done the e-cig crap before, but honestly I think its easier just going for it.

The first 2 weeks SUCKED. I hated everything and everyone. I felt like I was never going to be happy again lol. The 2 weeks after that were pretty bad, then at the 4 week stage, I felt like a non smoker instead of a smoker trying to quit and from then on, it was fine. I pretty much never feel like smoking now.

I weaned myself down to one smoke before bed and then replaced that with a patch before bed. Not through the night though just for 30 mins or so and then took it off. I found it to be a surprisingly easy process.

^This. I've found whenever i go cold turkey or swap it i go back. I manged to quit for two years by weaning myself down over the course of a month then when i was down to 1 or 2 a day i turned it to 1 or 2 a week for when moments go real bad then just quit all together.

Sadly I started again two years ago, but i'm in the process of weaning down again on 5-8 a day depending on the day.

So last night I had my last smoke. I'm not that heavy a smoker, probably 20 - 25 a day but this is the longest time I have gone without smoking in a long time.

I'm using patches at the moment and they seem to take most of the stress away from not smoking which is good. I'm determined to give up this time. I sit down to do something and within 20 minutes I have to go outside to smoke so I just end up wasting so much time because of that and also I spend somewhere between £300 and £400 a month on smoking which is just ridiculous. I could get some really nice computer hardware in no time if I stopped completely. So that is my goal. If I manage to stop properly I'll treat myself when I buy my new computer :).

Anyone else trying to give up smoking?

I gave up 3 years ago after a 20 year habit.

I tried all manner of things to get off cancer sticks, the only thing that worked for me was going cold turkey and manning up.

Good Luck!

I used an electric cig to give up. Smoked it like i would have a normal cig, stood outside and smoked it for as long as a normal cig would. Even when it was raining i would stand outside. I then started to reduce the nicotine levels and then eventually stopped altogether. I made sure never to smoke it indoors or anywhere else i wouldnt smoke a normal cig. good luck mate

OP, I wish you the very best of luck.

I gave up last October (Stoptober) and still going strong :)

I didn't go with patches but instead used a combination of NiQuitin Strips and Nicotinell lozenges.

The amount I was spending per month was basically stupid, I was probably buying a pack 5 out of 7 days a week as I would never go out of an evening without a full packet. If working I'd smoke possibly 10 a day, then on days off 15 - 20.

I certainly feel better for it both in my health and bank balance and as you've said if you can save that money treat yourself to some new hardware or what ever you fancy and it'll make it all the more worth while.

I do still have cravings from time to time, but they so soon pass and aren't as bad as they used to be in the first few months. I did have a couple of drags on my firsts day on a skiing holiday in March and soon handed it over to someone, it tasted foul!! Since then nothing.

I still have on my fridge door a quitting timeline I printed off which lists the benefits over time starting at 20 mins then moving on to 8 hours, 24, 48, 72, 2 - 12 weeks etc.

Stick with it, it's certainly not easy. I'd been thinking about for a good while and knew it wasn't good for me, we all know that!! and then finally I was ready to give it a go and fingers crossed will continue to remain smoke free.

Keep us all posted, and remember, when you get the craving or urge to light up, that at the end of the day you've saved yourself a tenner, not to mention the health benefits.

Good luck & regards

Vape!

I started smoking at around 14, gave up last year at the age of 30. Best thing I've done.

I starting vaping, really enjoyed it. It turned into a hobby, even started making my own liquids. We don't smoke in the house, so during the wet evenings, I vaped instead of smoked.

I than slowly enjoyed the vape more than the fags.

I cut right down in September, than completed stoptober. Found it rather easy to be honest. No patches or gum. Just a bit of nicotine in the liquid.

That Christmas I got a sore throat, so decided to stop vaping for a few days. (The vape liquid was nicotine free by then).

Managed a few weeks without the vape and sold all my vaping gear.

I tried a fag a few months ago when out one evening, didn't like it. Coughed by guts up and threw it away.

Only downside is, I now snack a lot more in the evenings, so put some weight on. I'm now trying to tackle that, and joined the gym last week.

Good luck!

i gave up a long time ago, i started by chewing gum and a lot of it, i also found that i had to leave a packet of fags in the kitchen drawer or i would crave them even more if i had none in the house.

good luck pal

I gave up 3.5 years ago, woke up one day after 25 years and said "i have had enough of this smoking ****" chucked 3x50gramms of tobacco in the bin and never touched one since.

Didn't use anything to stop just the will to cut out the horrible smelling fags.

All the best to you op :)

Stopped smoking and drinking at the same time 2 months ago. (I didn't smoke much though, <5 a day) :)

Its a real test going to the pub and sitting with my friends drinking diet coke, and not going out for a fag with the smokers.

Even though I was a very light smoker, it was still weeks and weeks before I stopped bloody coughing!

Funny this topic should come up today!

As only today I was thinking about quitting smoking. Just thinking about it brings me out in sweats though. :(

If I quit smoking for a year I could get a £5k 8 pack PC......

Mental preparation is at hand me thinks. ;)

I quit about six years ago. After the birth of my boy. I basically imagined his 21st. Saying how he wished I was there to celebrate it with him. But alas I was dead from lung cancer after smoking all those years.

And also I used those inhalers. The little plastic ones. They are fairly rough but took the edge off. I would delay taking a hit, they were so rough. Eventually I realised I wasn't even needing the hit.

Never will I touch another cigarette again.

This is key!! For a long time I knew I should, as strange as it sounds I just wasn't in the right frame of mind to do it. Then the time came and it made it all the easier.

Yes, the savings are great!! :D

you will know when you've quit as the smell of the smoke on others will disgust you :)

There certainly are times you notice it a lot more, especially when out at the pub and people come back inside and it's also been raining.

3 to 400 quid a month!!?! Good God that's more expensive than I expected

I used to smoke B & H and when I gave up they were just under £10 for a pack of 20. £9.98 IIRC

They must be over a tenner now, especially if you were to buy them at a garage.

Gave up 6 years ago when the missus was pregnant with our eldest, after smoking about 20 a day for 15 years.

4 days after I stopped I bought an iPhone 4 as incentive to stay off the fags.

Went completely cold turkey and just used willpower but I found it pretty easy and before long I wasn't even thinking about smoking at all.

This was when a pack of 20 were just over a fiver and we had no kids so no idea how I'd afford to smoke now! Definitely glad I gave it up and it was a real sense of achievement.

I stopped almost 6 years ago to the day. Used the inhalator but got the dose wrong (didnt use enough). Was hard, but I knew my mood swings were withdrawal which helps to know why your being a d***.

It's stupid when I think back at how much money it cost me.

To anyone thinking of quitting, it's 100% on you. You need to want it.
