Anyone else regret buying a x2 939?

no can't say I'm regretting the upgrade when I did it. I had to buy a new rig so I did and bought my opteron 175 system, then my dual athlon mp died on me anyways :(
Due to the opterons motherboard dying I bought a second mb for speed of replacement and had a spare one so bought a cheap x2 4200+ that I put in my fileserver and it's exactly the same speed when using it in 3ds max as the 175 (no overclocks).
Currently looking at switching the server to mobile cpu and sticking the x2 in a sugo like the 175 and using them as a mini render farm for 3d work so it won't go to waste :)

Can't see any reason to upgrade to c2d at the moment but will probably upgrade later in the year to a dual quad mac pro (if they ever release one), will still keep the x2's anyways as they were part of my initial plan for my business setup.

No regrets here either. They were fit for my purpose then and it still does what I need today. Sure, id like something faster and better, but for now - its fine. Relax, crack open a beer, enjoy! *hippy mode* :p

... until Sunday when booze prices go up - thats when the world will end! :p

i can get a s939 4200 for cheap of a freind but my question is will it be an improvment over my 3700+ @ 2.9ghz
i dont do much apart from play games

if those games are multicore enabled then yeah you will see a difference. I noticed a significant difference going from a [email protected] to my 4400x2 @ stock 2.2ghz in Quake 4

I bought my X2/Opteron while stocks were vanishing (fully aware that 939 was going dead end) and I have no regrets. Cheap and quick upgrade and multitasking is considerably quicker. 939's got life in it, performance wise :)

A 20second Pi 1M would be nice, but last time I checked, my computer's primary use wasn't benchmarks...

I think you hit the nail on the head there Mul :p

I really wish I never bought a X2 939 socket last year, it wasn't even 9 months before they d/c them and release AM2.. look how long 478 was around for!

Dude, No!, these are great performing chips, my 939 X2 4800 gives superb Windows and Oblivion performance and i bought it at a stupidly low price from OCUK during the slump following Conroe release.

The PC component market is fickle and i've got shelves full of kit that i regret buying but that 939 processor is certainly not one of them. Its powering the slick (if unreliable due to a MOBO choice that i DO regret) dual monitor Vista setup i'm typing this on now.

So no, if anyone sees a decent 939 bargain to be had then snap it up!

Yep, you should wait 100 years, by that time really fast CPU's will be out. That way you would be grateful you didn't buy the slow CPU's in the past.

I don't regret buying a 4400.. I bought it for £135 then sold it on a few months later for over £50 profit! Get in! :D

Me, not at all.

AM2 in essence, is the same chips in 939 sockets modified to work with ddr2, nothing else, its actually slower clock for clock when using standards due to ddr2 latencies.

478 was only around for a longer time than usual because there was no need to change the socket, lga 775 was introduced to make use of ddr2 and better power distribution over more pins (originally for the netburst core)

Mainstream quad core is now approaching fast, so im glad i didn't get a c2d as it wouldn't have been the same increase in going from a p4 3.2c to an x2 @ 2.7.

i regret 939, it stole my cash and everything and kept going wrong when i was a noob with pcs.

i put 5 grand into a pc with a amd 3200 which we baught from a shop which i had no idea about back then....

5 grand!

bloody thing

I don't understand the pupose of this thread. Buying a new X2 939 system today, not realising what's on offer from Intel, yes I would regret it.
But up until C2D was available, X2 and A64 where outstanding for a good few years. They still do the job today in most cases compared with C2D, albeit slower.

Pointless thread imo.

Not really, I went from an opteron 146 @ 2.98 to a x2 3800 @ 2.5 and the x2 seams quicker in most applications that I use. Even games that arn't multi threaded seam quicker. I now like the thought of downloading stuff whilst playing games. Multi tasking is the way forward.

And how much quicker is a C2D in the real world ! unless your some kinda benchmark freak who upgrades to make a few more points in benchmarks for blagging rights.

AM2 was a flop really I'd say, I'm sure 939 was more popular.
AM2 = AMD being blagged by the industry to go for DDR2 Ram cos Intel made it the new standard.

5 grand ! what was the case made out of ? Gold with encrusted Diamonds!

5 Grand is a lot to spend on any pc over the past 10 years !

I went socket 939 over 2 years ago now. I'm still running that same rig (2gb ram, X800 XTPE, FX53 etc).

Due to the fact more quad cores are being released etc I am reluctant to jump at the moment to any new platform as I will pretty much need new everything.

I have just bought a 3007 dell monitor and my graphics card won't run it at full resolution so I'm seriously looking at getting a cheap SLI mobo and sticking an 8800gtx and overclocking the CPU. The rest of my bits are more than adequate (raptors, ram etc).

I've been very happy with socket 939 and tbh its inevitable that things get phased out. Imagine how peeved peeps will be in 12 months time when intel issue new socket 775.5 with ddr3 and all the gear is redundant again ;)

Its obselete when it leaves the factory we all deep down know this. :D

Despite my earlier entry, I agree with this totally.

Sorry to bring this up again but... 5 grand on a PC?!!!!!!!

Bet the shop you bought it from had a giggle! ;)

I remember when my dad got an amstrad cpw-464 and decided to go for the green screen monitor as that was £300 as a bundle whereas the colour monitor bundle cost £400!!! You'd have to pay to get that taken away now! :p

Come to think of it - i remember buying a ps1 for £300 on its release day!

Still running

AMD64 3200+ Venice @ 2.5
2gb Ram
ATI 1800XT 256mb

Built it almost 1year ago stil very happy. Keep getting tempted to put in a 3800X2 and clock it. But all i really play atm is wow. So dont think ill bother!
