Anyone else regret buying a x2 939?

No regrets here. The 939's clock equivalent to or better than their AM2 counterparts. From my X2 alone, i saw a ~25% increase in apps that were multithreaded but weren't "multi-core optimised". And yes, i did test it.

Ok, its expensive, but it's worth it.

s939 still has life in it. heck even socket A still has life left in it. got xp-m 2600 here running at 2.3ghz and its used in my media pc, paired up with a 7600gs, games run great, stuff like farcry, hl2 etc and general windows performance is quite good.

the way technology is right now id say that the biggest bottleneck in the pc is currently the hard drive. but we have solid state drives just around the corner now to sort that out.

who else agrees with me on hard drives being the main bottleneck in a pc these days (for general overall system performance)?

i regret 939, it stole my cash and everything and kept going wrong when i was a noob with pcs.

i put 5 grand into a pc with a amd 3200 which we baught from a shop which i had no idea about back then....

5 grand!

bloody thing

you would regret also putting 5 grant to a C2D (or even 3)

and the 3200 did not stole your cash, was the dealer.

BTW i bought an opteron 170 in November and happy about it; it will last me all this year and possible part of the next one.

there isn't anything a x2 939 can't run because its too slow so why regret it. as for 939, it was out almost 3 years ago now. they could have bought out x2's only on AM2 and not given any 939 users an upgrade path at all, glass ain't always half empty ;)

meh. the last chips on 478 didn't get a long run either, thats life. yes a c2d will overclock further and be in general faster, but 99% of the time you can't feel that power as 99% of us don't use 99% of the cpu power 99% of the time :p woo, i was on a role.

computer parts, whatever stuff you buy is going to be completely outdated in 3 years, but outdated doesn't mean useless. in 3 years most people will have octo cored cpu's with 20 times the power, but most people will still only be using them to browse the net. life's short for us, life's shorter for computer parts :p

true, i still use systems from over 7 years ago, if it still works then why complain. doesn;t matter hwo slow a system is, can always find some use for it.

Now that can't be entirely true, unless you've set affinity of all programs to 1 core/CPU :)
You know what i mean, making full use of dual core.
Im just saying that my C2D is faster than my A64 due mostly to its raw speed rather than having 2 cores.

I regret that AMD binned a perfectly good socket design, there is no reason they couldn't still produce S939 CPU :(

HEADRAT

well you have to admit that when amd went to ddr2 technology went fast
next year were gona have ddr3 but amd did have a perfectly good skt and ddr2 didnt make much of a difference

I do kind of regret buying an X2 4200+ last night for £99, only to see it on 'This Week Only' today for £79! Still looking forward to getting it, though. It's an upgrade from my Winnie 3200+.

I'm seriously looking at the 4200 on special offer - only £93.99 inc VAT - but would getting an opteron be better ?

Can get a 165 for £89.95 or a 170 for £115 ... gah decisions - sup comm really would benefit from it !

Which is likely to overclock better - 165 or 170 as I will be pushing it as much as I can - granted not to 3.1 Ghz like my 4000 sandy but still as fast as I can! ?

The 170 is nearly 30 squid more ... is it worth that extra or will just a 165 do me? :)

Well i don't mind too much, as long as it would help out with stuff like sup comm for a year or so, as i won't be doing a full upgrade till after i finish uni - can't go into final year with nice new pc to distract me :o

I'm currently on an A64 3700+ @ 2.7ghz, but am upgrading to an A64 4400x2 (2mb Cache) for £65 (mates rates) in two weeks, so as far as i'm concerned there is still loads of life left in 939 x2...

The only way it would be a waste of money would be if you bought a 939 dual core set-up, then bought a c2d set-up, but then that is more your fault than that of the socket.

well whadya know I just made a few purchases and am in the process of making the switch.

got a p5b deluxe, e6300, and ballistix pc2 5300

Not the most practical upgrade but this is kind of a hobby as well. :) and getting a new system to tweak and OC is worth it to me...also i hope to get some money back on selling my s939 setup
