I avoid this issue by refusing to eat anything green.

I tend to prefer spinach to lettuce in just about everything.

This, we put spinach into our salads all the time, often only having spinach.

Still needs to be washed though. I put 1/2 dozen ice cubes into the water that I'm going to wash the lettuce and I find the bugs come off the leaves better.

I tend to go for iceberg, one reason is that it is often bug free because of the leaf formation, also I prefer a bit of bite in my salads but of course I add a little of something else such as spinach, rocket or cress to give additional flavour and texture.
