Ive had this strange sensation a few times when sleeping.
It feels as if you are awake but then some kind of feeling paralyses you and you cannot move, it seems to slowly creep up on you and takes a lot of effort to stop it happening, if you let it go further you go into somekind of wierd trance like state but i usually just snap out of it.
It sounds quite odd but does not freak me out, maybe its a dream or part of dreaming but I just wondered if anyone else has experienced it?

wow, thats really amazing, never realised it was common, at least i am not going mad!
Had some really bizarre dreams lately too, I guess the shift work does not help.
I might just "let go" into one of these episodes to see what happens, I usually just concentrate and bring myself out of it.

I have it quite a lot mate. It is called Sleep paralysis. Infact, I had it last night.

It doesn't freak me out any more though as I know what it is. It sure is a strange feeling though.

Search for sleep paralysis on here, there's been a few threads before. I've had it a couple of times, freaky but quite cool afterwards!

I get that all the time, It tends to be really hot in my room when it happens and is quite freaky, I get it at least a few times a month but have just learnt to live with it and not get freaked out by out. Just have to try keep moving until your body responds. Nice to know i'm not the only one as no one else I know gets it or doesn't talk about it anyways :)

As an aside - I don't reccomend you do diving if you suffer from that - as apparently it can trigger it - someone I know drowned due to it :(

There was an article in "The Sun" today about it. Not that I buy the paper, but as any man should know, if a copy is sitting at work a quick glance at page 3 is in order!

It's called Sleep Paralysis and they had a link to a large forum/society that deals with it. Can't remember the name! It's also known as Night Nurse Sickness as people on nightshift get it a lot such as nurses.

I had problems with it when I used to work night shifts but alas now I'm on 9-5 I haven't had it since :D

EDIT: Here is the site - http://www.spis.org.uk/

It is comforting to know that Im sane and not going mad at least, it only occurs once in a blue moon, no real pattern to it, have had some bonkers dreams though, I had my first ever movie type dream where I woke up all sweaty and tense, I was in car park somehere, and I was directing HGVs to park in bays, then i looked up and saw a helicopter, the helicopter then flipped over and crashed down to the ground landing on top of me, which is when I woke up, frankly quite strange.

Have had two episodes, but haven't had it recently (thank God) tend to get 'stuck' in the dream and can't move or have an almost out of body experience.

V scary.

Ever dreamt of doing something, and then wake up to find you're actually doing it for real?

I had one recently where I dreamt I was diving off a bridge into water and as soon as I hit the water and got wet, I woke up to find my drink of water next to me was all over me. :/

Lol a drink falling on you isn't the same as diving off a bridge so surely you weren't doing it for real :D Now if you had woken up in a river somewhere then

I sometimes get a weird feeling like I'm falling, just before falling asleep and it wakes me up. The feeling you get if you were to nearly fall off a ladder.

I thought you were talking about when you've been sleeping in an awquard position and when u wake up you can't move until blood slowly gets back into ur limbs :P. That's cool.

Related.. but I had I dream recently where a few of us ended up in a bar and were finding somewhere to sit. I clearly remember sitting down and realising we had sat right under a ceiling light/spot light. I couldn't make out the bar or the people in it. Shortly after I woke up and I noticed sun in my eyes - hadn't shut the curtains properly. Cool overlap of real world and the dream world I though.

I've had it once, I woke up in the early hours of the morning but could not move, I remember trying really hard to move my arm but even though my brain was telling it to move it didn't respond. It was a really weird feeling and I remember my heart racing, a few seconds later I snapped out of it and could move freely again.

Sleep paralysis. It's usually frightening, but it's fairly common and not pathological.

Basic summary for people who can't be bothered to look it up:

During some parts of a sleep cycle, your body shuts off voluntary movement so that you don't move to match your dreams. Under some circumstances, you can suddenly wake while this paralysis is still in effect. It is not directly dangerous. You will breathe automatically - that's a different system to voluntary breathing and other movement.

It's common to feel that there is a strong pressure on your chest, probably as your mind interpreting your inability to breathe voluntarily. It's also common to feel a presence, for some reason, maybe even see something. Good, bad or indifferent. Altered states of consciousness are common too. Fear, enlightenment, general strangeness.

Visited while asleep, unhuman figure, powerful presence, state of enlightenment...sounds like the basis of some religions.
