Anyone else wanting to upgrade but just can't stomach paying so much for it?

As above, Every other day I have a look at the 1070's and 1080's humming and hawing about it but in the end the asking price is just way to much for something i'll want to get rid of in about a years time.

My attitude is if you think the price for any hobbyist product is too high then don't pay it - you get plenty of people moaning how much Nvidia is making(record profits) and then end up buying the cards anyway, and then complaining the prices are too high.

If you feel the price is fair for what you get out of it,then pay the price.

You only have to look at the current sub £300 cards - they are not massively faster than the ones they replaced.

So,you probably need to wait another year or so until the refreshes are launched or the next generation replacements are released and I expect for the price of a GTX1070 you will get a far better card(unless the pound tanks even more).

Its up to you if its going to be worth it or not. In your situation if your looking for a decent upgrade, and something thats not too costly.

Get a 2nd hand 980Ti. Close to twice as fast as your 970 and can get them for around £300 now.

In fairness, although the 1080 is a lot of money, I would think that it would last pretty well at 2560x1440 for a while. Game engines aren't making the leaps they once were IMO, its enabled me to get through my backlog with real gusto. Enjoying getting though games with all the eye candy.

Haven't really made a large GPU purchase new for a long time. usually a lurker for the best of the last gen or 2 in the second hand market

I don't get the moaning for the 1070/80 prices, as they are cheaper/around the same price as the Ti was when it was released, have 2GB more memory than it, and are around the same performance/faster than it.

With prices the way they are, we will see graphics progress slow down. Developers aim for the middle of the market specs and while prices are ridiculous, most people will just hold off upgrading for longer or buy used.

There's no doubt Nvidia is ripping everyone off big time. You can buy 2 consoles for the price of a 1080. Or a PS4 with a VR helmet.

Agreed with tyler above, if you really want a decent upgrade but not pay the current high prices then go for a second hand 980Ti. Sub £280 they would be your best bet at the moment.

When you consider that it matches the last gen Titan X the 1070 is priced okay if you go for one of the cheaper aftermarket models.

At but in the end the asking price is just way to much for something i'll want to get rid of in about a years time.

That's on you as you certainly won't need to replace it in a years time, A card like a 1070 or 1080 will be more than good enough for several years.

So was the 980ti and Titan, didnt stop people upgrading those for the newer Pascal cards ;)

My last couple of graphics cards have been 2nd hand.

I usually wait until a significant GPU upgrade is going to cost me in the region of under £100 to switch (taking into account what return I'll get for my existing card 2nd hand). Recently that's tended to be on a 2-3 year upgrade cycle and my current card is a GTX 970.

Think the 970 will basically be my last GPU on this platform. My FX5200 (peculiar Athlon x2 unlocked to quad with extra cache) is basically equivalent to a Phenom II 955 or 965. It's made me a cheapskate for CPUs though - cost about £30 in 2011. I don't see any other £30 CPUs being worth upgrading to yet. I'm ordinarily a single player gamer and tolerant of low framerates though so it doesn't feel like an upgrade is entirely necessary yet.

Conversely, I get irritated if I can't enable all the eye candy in games (at 1920x1200). With my old 660ti I was usually still GPU limited at that resolution. The 970's pushed me into the right ballpark for most of the games I want to play at the moment.

Everything but my GPU and SSD are second hand. Rarely buy new these days. Usually hit the MM for stuff I need as it's usually well looked after by whomever is selling it. Let them pay the "buy new tech premium" and I'll take a perfectly fine second hand part for cheap. I managed to get parts for a young lad, all second hand but the case so it at least will look brand new to him. Saved a whack of cash for his family. They would ever have been able to buy him a new pc otherwise.

Yeh, i struggled to stomach the prices of this gen.

But in the end i thought lifes too short and bought one.

But I'll be keeping it a while and getting my moneys worth though.

New prices are crazy right now, but there are some great deals to be had with used cards. The 290X in particular offers amazing performance for not much more than £100 these days. Obviously not going to be much good if you're already using something like a 970 though, given that a 980 Ti is the only realistic and worthwhile upgrade that you'd get used, and there's plenty of competition for them.

The top end will always command a premium and, this time around, it's being compounded by the collapse of the pound post-Brexit.

With continued economic and political uncertainty and most people now predicting inflation and interest rates will start to rise next year, things are only going to get more expensive I'm afraid.

Thankfully, I don't need to upgrade though if I did there wouldn't be much of a choice anyway. Hopefully, this card will last me a long time yet.

As said, some of the 1070s are reasonably priced. It all depends what you're upgrading from.
