Anyone else with the A Level results today?

...but there's a massive difference between understanding the subject and being able to answer exam questions.

Of course - good exam technique is just as much a part of getting a good grade as knowledge and understanding of the subject matter. Are you not doing practice exam questions on your course?

I think we did one, maybe two in a lesson. But really we're pushed for time to actually get through the material, not much free lesson time left by the time it comes to revision.

What's General Studies? Can someone provide an example question please.

Jan 2011 cultural/social domain.

They look easy, however they aren't marked like say a biology paper would be, or even an english paper - they're like..not looking for the answer for the question as such, they're looking for a specific method of explaining your answer.

My school (a top ranking exclusive grammar school that receives consecutive top grades) gave us one lesson of prep for this where we looked at one past paper - it's accepted in something like less than 20% of universities in the country as a legitimate qualification (UCAS statistics from a few months ago) and you can imagine the kinds of universities that take up that 20% - Let's just say Oxford won't be interested...

Blimey... That's not good! I always made sure a good portion of my lessons centred around exam technique, but maybe we're not quite so pushed for time in A level Music?

If you want to help yourself out, ask your teacher for some past papers. Do some off your own back, get them handed in and marked, and ask for some feedback. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat again (etc). If you can "play the game" in the exam AND you know the material, there's no reason why you can't do well :)

Those marks could be for anything...

Exactly.

In this situation, read source D and write a bunch of bullet points. Decide what point the article in source D is trying to make and come up with some of your own points to counter that. Make sure you have at least 16 or 18 bullet points - one for each of the 14 marks available, and some extras in case a couple of your points don't (for whatever reason) appear on the mark scheme.

Then structure your essay to compare and contrast the source D points with your own. Evaluate how reliable source D is (is it biased in any way), and form a conclusion as to whether you think society is broken or not - spelling out your reasoning.

The comparing, contrasting and evaluating of the different points is your key to good marks - they're classed as higher order thinking skills and you'll probably find the overall (holistic) mark scheme for the question requires you to show them in order to get even reasonable marks.

That's generally where people go wrong - general studies are never marked as you'd think they'd be marked.

Not worth the time to care about general studies, I know someone who got an A* in general studies. What's the point in even thinking about it for a second?

Jan results went fine.

Finished A Level maths, got an A. (Needed 82 in core4 and 41 in M1 for an A*. Worked really hard for core4 and got 65, didn't do anywork for M1 and got 71 :o)

Biology 85%
Chemistry 79%

I'm happy with that. Need to average 68% in my biology coursework and summer exam for an A. Need an average of 73% in chemistry coursework and summer exam for an A.

meh

EDIT: OP- how did you flop biology? AQA biology is the easiest **** in the world.

OCR Biology is not.. :(

And what kinda' thing do you do for your biology/chemistry coursework? Out of interest..
On OCR we only do a few assessed practicals.

In Chemistry we have six PSAs that we have to do throughout the entire course, assessed by the teacher with two marks available for each. Then the ISA is a practical (usually a titration ;)) with an associated exam paper.

And i can't say AQA Biology is particularly easy either :p

As a tip, it's probably worth getting those CPG revision guides for science subjects, I used to find them really good and they highlight all the buzz words needed for exams.

How the heck did you pull of an A in Physics, but only an E in Biology and Chemistry???

That just isnt right, Biology out the three sciences is plain simple.

And i can't say AQA Biology is particularly easy either :p

I got a C on AQA Biology and only revised for a day or two before the exam. Theres nothing hard about the subject if you can manage an A in Physics.

I wouldn't be surprised if they marked me down because they disagreed with me :p

I doubt it, I got a B in general studies by answering every question with an essay about how Wales was pointless, I even referenced sheep shagging.

It was a truly stupid paper that our 6th form forced everyone to do just to improve their grade averages.
