Anyone fixed their own 360 RROD?

I wish I could send mine back scythey boy or I defo would.

Its funny I know ppl in Alsager who balk at the thought of being classed as Stokies!

does anyone reckon it might work OK to try this method without cleaning and reapplying thermal compound?

I dont think i've got any you see and definately dont have any materials to remove the existing thermal compound...

It'll help a lot more if you do re-compound. The stuff on there is horrendous, im not even sure mine had compound looking at it. Was jus tlike a silver plastic square on the bottom that peeled off.

I used lighter fluid and cotton wool buds to get rid of the old stuff. It takes a bit of work but it's definitely worth doing as the stock stuff is dire.

have you previously removed the X clamp ice on fire?

I'm so annoyed, got my 360 completely disassembled and the last thing I need is to unscrew the heatsinks from the metal tray the motherboard sits in and it need a torx-9 which is the only bit I havn't got!!!! :(

Hi all,

just tried this, reapplied thermal compound I put two washers between the mobo and the heatsink, and booted it up with no metal case or plastic case on,

it booted all seemed fine, started CoD4 and attempted to start a single player game - DISC UNREADABLE error. Then loaded the game, did the same again. Then I got 2 red lights on the left hand side. According to the top post in this forum its overheating, any ideas please anyone? not sure what to try next

OK update. I did the same I did to the GPU on the CPU, the Xbox booted, so I decided to leave it at the main menu for a bit so it wouldnt stress the GPU straight away.

The fan speeds increased.

Oh my word they increased, they were going extremely fast and loud, then it overheated with 2 red lights :(

I have one washer under the motherboard, and 2 washers above the motherboard, and a thin spread of arctic silver 3 on the CPU and GPU. Wonder what is going on, can anyone provide any expertise please?

How tight have you done the screws? I used a small screwdriver and only the force from my fingers to do the screws up tightly - didn't use any force from my arms whatsoever. Experiment with the screws, loosen or tighten them up a bit depending on how they are at the moment.

just over fingertight tightness i'd say on both GPU and CPU.

I seem to be close because it at least boots....

I didn't clean the chips properly of thermal compound as I didnt want to use nail polish remover on them, so I may buy some isopropyl alcohol and new thermal compound (the stuff I was using was 6 year old AS3) and try again tonight...

Do a search on my name matey.. I did the same fix just a couple of months ago... I actually used the correct machine screws from b&q but only used 1 metal washer and 2 plastic ones to isolate the board... Cleaned off the old tim with iso and mad sure i got ever last bit of it off... then i refitted the coolers and reflowed the soldier with the heatgun... Works a treat..:) Got some funny looks at work tho... :D

cheers just read that. I've decided I'm going to get some isopropyl alcohol and some cotton wool tipped things to clean the thermal compound off the chips, then try again, and if not I learnt a useful lesson from your thread : that people have had success sending it off for repair even when second hand if the ownership has been sucessfully changed.

Just outta interest did the original owner ever get back to you with his address etc in order to change the registration? I have just emailed mine but he probably wont reply thinking its a con or something I reckon.

He did but he said some rubbish about his details are no good as they may send the 360 back to him... So i repaired it then told him it was working fine... :D DIG DIG... ;)

Yes I did. I have a full torx set from T6 to T25.

I used a propper reflow BGA machine yesterday, the xbox is back 100% :D

say again sorry mate? dont really get you?

Where did you use a reflow BGA machine? I dont know what that is but I'm assuming its a heat gun style machine? I think I need to do heat my board up according to xb-scene, it scares me a bit.

It's a machine designed for BGA components. It heats the board/chip from top and bottom at the same time, with slightly different temps. It then takes it through a full cooling and heating cycle. From 150c to 300c and back to normal temp. Same sort of machine Microsoft would use.

It's not mine, I gave it to a friend who works with these machines all day and he did it for me.

The heatgun is another story, I personally don't trust that 100% as you can melt other crap on the board if you don't insulate it properly. With this BGA machine, it only heats up the area you want it to heat up!

Check the xbox again this morning, still working!

I R a happy bunny!

Well, I tried to do my own RROD fix but messed up big time! I over tightened the bolts and then realised they were too tight. Went to loosen one and it was stuck, ended up messing up the head of the bolt. In the end I had to grind the head off the bolt with a dremel.

Unfortunately this means i'll need a new heatsink for the CPU. Whoops!
