I'm tempted to flash mine but I'm going to leave it for the time being. Last flash I done was to upgrade the default T-Mobile firmware to:

HTC Version
ROM: 1.35
Radio Version: 1.18
SPL: 1.09

Its been great for me so far, hence my reluctance to change. Its more stable, faster and battery life improved.

The WM6 versions over at XDA are beta/early release versions. There are a few bugs and some features are missing, although these can be installed via cab files posted all over he forums.

I'm personally going to wait until a bit longer until a more mature release is available.

In the space of 2-3 weeks over at XDA, around 3 WM6 ROM's have been released, each one better than the last. Don't know about you, but I can't be bothered of going through the hassle of flashing the firmware and re-installing my apps every time a better release comes along every week!

The Hermes Wiki page is here with loads of decent info: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes

I've just flashed the Vario II again to ROM version 2.05 (WM5, AKU 3.3) and the very latest radio version.

Feels much quicker than the previous 1.35 I had on there.

I really feel sorry for those still using the default T-Mobile branded firmware!:p

Still on T-Mobile Branded Firmware but upgrading now :)

Just running the CID-Unlock as I was on Bootloader Ver 1.04

Then which is the best ROM to use as there are many on the XDA Developers Web Site, assuming the QTEK001 ROM 2.05.225.1 AKU 3.3 is this correct for a T-Mobile MDA Vario II?

i've just upgraded to that one aswell :)

i'm going to wait for a proper version of WM6 to be released before i update to that.

question:

i've downloaded the softkey app so i can change the programs on the taskbar, as that didnt appear to be part of the new rom.

anyone know the file name for the one that was 'running programs' on the original t-mobile software?

useful that you can set the x button to close the programs by tapping & holding the x button now

Mate you wanna talk us through that please? As i said before there are pages and pages of info and i dont want to brick the phone..

Thanks

i downloaded the rom (.exe file)

turned off my screensaver + power saving on my desktop
connected up phone to pc via usb cable - made sure active sync icon was 'green'.

double clicked the rom installer .exe - followed instructions

i was on bootloader 1.04 so it fails the first time, but leaves the phone at 0% of the upgrade.

clicked exit on the rom installer on the PC, then ran it a second time, it then flashes the rom - takes about 25mins - dont touch anything on your PC while its flashing.

job done

the top one on here is the one i used (HTC - 2.05.255.1)

just noticed this at the bottom of the page

If your Hermes still has bootloader version 1.04, you should CID-Unlock it first, then you can safely flash any ROM with bootloader >= 1.06. Otherwise it is not recommended to flash ROMs with bootloader >= 1.06.

didnt CID unlock mine

this is what i did
Flashing instructions if you are in bootloader 1.04 and get a INVALID VENDOR ID error:

Try the following steps:

1. Extract the rom contents by right click (use Winrar)
2. Make sure you are connected through ActiveSync (green icon in system tray).
3. Open ROMUpgradeUT.exe
4. Go through all steps. Eventually you will see your device reset and go into a ROM Flash screen at 0%. You should get an error from the Flash software stating wrong Vendor ID code.
5. Don't disconnect the device or reset it. Close the Flash software.
6. Click on ROMUpgradeUT.exe again and go through all steps. This time it should start flashing the ROM.
7. That's it.

havent put the settings in for MMS, just the internet at the moment

Links to all the ROMs here.

The one we're using is the HTC 2.05.255.1 01/17/07 (top of the list).

MMS works perfectly here. Just make sure you visit the link further up the thread I posted. Instructs you how to manually enter the details step by step with pictures.:)

You don't have to CID unlock anymore.

All the ROM update exe's contain a file that is sent to the phone first which put your handset into a temporary CID unlock mode before flashing. Quite handy for warranty purposes ;)
