Anyone going to wait for Zen4 Vcache '7800X3D' / '7900X3D' CPUs?

The 5800X3D keeps up pretty well with high end Alder Lake CPUs in games, but falls behind in workloads that benefit from high clockspeeds and >8 CPU cores.

It seems reasonable to assume that the Zen 4 series will include Vcache CPUs with 12/16 cores, probably clocked at approx. 5.0ghz. If that's so, it will have all the benefits of the 5800X3D, but potentially improved IPC (5-10%?), improved clock speeds and upto 12/16 cores.

Additionally, the total power usage of a 12/16 core CPU is almost certainly going to be lower than Intel's 10nm based 12th/13th generation (Golden cove core) processors.

So, is it worth waiting to build a new AM5 based system for these CPUs, assuming they release in the 1st half of 2023?

There's also an argument to wait for Zen 5 in Q4 2024, but then I wonder, will games really need that much more CPU power than the 5800X3D?

Do you think the 6800X3D /6800X3D 8 and 12 core Zen 4 Vcache CPUs will be too expensive then, to be worth the cost for gamers?

Personally, I might just settle for the 8 core variant, depending on cost. These seem like a rather clever addition to the Zen 3 and Zen 4 series, specifically being marketed at improved gaming performance, and the additional L3 cache will possibly be useful for other tasks too.

Note - I forgot to mention, there's at least an 8% gain in IPC for Zen 4, based on this slide from AMD:

If you have nothing and can wait, wait. If you need it now, then buy it now.

It's all pretty simple really, it's a personal choice only you can make.

You might think there is such a thing as buying at the wrong time, but there really isn't.

All you'll get other than my sensible response is a load of questions and subjective statements on the future release cycles and parts costs.

Absolutely none of which will help you make a better informed decision than you have with all the other advice that is already on these and other forums.

I upgraded to the 5800X3D as I thought it would take a while for Zen 4 X3D to come out but the rumour mill is that they are coming out at the end of the year? I will probably hold out with my 5800X3D until Zen 5 unless the benchmarks come out on the latest 4xxx Nvidia cards and there is a clear difference.

@Iron Man - The roadmap seems to imply a staggered launch for Zen4 and the vcache variants:

Similar to Zen 3. So, probably 1st half of 2023.

Best to save the money and put towards a better GPU as those are what provide the real gains in gaming unless your running 1080p on a 4 year+ old CPU.

They will be Ryzen 7000 series :)

With the IPC and clock bump Zen 4 should gain about 20% over Zen 3, AMD demoed gaming running at 5.5Ghz.

I wouldn't expect any more than 20% for games, this over the standard Zen 3, its probably = to Zen 3D, Zen 4-3D you could probably add another 20% on top of that.

I'm in the same conundrum with GPU's, i know what GPU's cost now, i'd like to wait but i don't know how long that's going to be, it could be another year before we see the new midrange GPU's, and i don't know how much they will cost, i do think they will be more expensive than they are right now, so i don't know what to do.

You are correct, so they will actually be called the 7800X3D and 7900X3D. I tend to forget about the 6000 series mobile chip only launch...

I think we will see the standard Zen 4 range first, as these will be the most competitive on price/performance, followed by X3D CPUs 3-6 months later.

I would imagine that AMD will want to ensure sufficient production capacity for the main series of Zen 4 chips first. 5nm EUV costs and production will be more costly and difficult vs 7nm, due to the increase in the complexity of the design.

I think everyone should take a look at the minimum framerates of the 5800X3D:

Ahead of the 12900KS in several of the titles, despite using DDR4. I think it is being gimped by the relatively low clock frequency and DDR4 RAM (to a lesser extent, core count). It will be a different story with Zen 4. You can see the 12900K being gimped by DDR4 @3200mhz also.

Some of the games (like WD:Legions) really love higher frequency RAM.
