I use a Windows Media Centre PC with freeview tuner, it has the usual freeview channels, 200GB of PVR storage, series record option, ability to stream Divx and Xvid from my own machine, can play my mp3 collection and have copied all my photos to it too. I can also stream recorded shows to my PC if i'm too lazy to go sit in the lounge.
The PC was an old one I had spare so just cost the price of a freeview tuner card and remote (quite reasonable off auction sites.) The main problem is that it takes more setting up than a box you just plug in. I do have a standalone DVD/Divx player but haven't used it since setting up MCE.

Until sky starts showing more original and quality proggies (less repeats and shopping channels), I'm sticking with me freeview box. theres no way I'm forking out for what I consider to be a sub standard package when I can get sufficient tv viweing options for free, well after a one off payment. If I wanna watch a film thats only recently been released I'll wait for it to be available for hire and see it then. Theres a fair choice on freeview regardless, and theres a coupla more film channels than on terestrial tv anyway, though i would like to see less shopping channels.

I think such units are great for "tech head" use, but for "family" use I suspect they're not ideal. I can just imagine my little one trying to watch a DVD on it, or my other half trying to set something up to record

I tried to build an HTPC for the family. When I finished, the wife looked at it and said "hows it work". No amount of tuition enabled her to get to grips with it, so i broke it up, sold the parts, and got me thomson freeview box. shes happy now, which means I am!
