Anyone have a Hot Tub?

The 13A plug in units usually cannot run the heater and pump at the same time, so over time will cool while being used, usually only single pump too.

If you have a dual pump unit which also runs the heater while the pumps are on it will require a dedicated spur, isolator and correctly sized cabling.

Ours is 32A, it cannot run both pumps at max speed and the heater at the same time.

I’d get a 32A if we did it again, but the jets are more than powerful enough for our needs. The temperature is only a bit more of a problem in the depths of winter, but you just factor this in and start a couple of degrees higher than normal. You’ll lose about 0.5C per 20-30mins when it’s really cold without the heater on. It was more than worth the compromise to have a hot tub from pretty much the start of the lockdowns.

Have an electrician coming Wednesday to put the hot tub into a fused spur as posted above and to add a separate new outdoor socket. Just hope the hot tub is ok, it actually hasn’t lost too much heat. I may even be able to salvage the water, at worst I can probably do a partial water change or a good shock.

Do you know what control box is inside the casing? It may be possible to get yours to run as a 32a. A lot of the Balboa and Gecko controllers are universal and you can alter the setup on them via dip switches or on the topside controller enable them to run the pumps and heater simultaneously, or upgrade the heating element to a 3kw one (the 13a tubs usually only have a 2kw element)

To prevent any misunderstanding again, your electric supply would obviously need to be upgraded if altering the setup on your controller is possible

Yep, ours was setup on 13a until the plug burnt out, now on a dedicated 40a RCBO with the dip switches changed.

A dedicated circuit is 100% the way to go.

First time doing a partial (basically 95%) water change. Skipped the flush, chucked the sump pump in and allowed it to empty everything it could, skipped bit where I vacuum up every last drop and then just refilled. Haven’t used the hot tub too much and it’s mostly good other than a bit cloudy, but figured it couldn’t harm to do an interim water change after a few months of use. Water is crystal clear again now after refill.

I haven't the desire to own one myself but I do appreciate one with a good view on holiday. I wonder if I would feel the experience on holiday would be diminished if I were to have use of one more often.

First time tonight heating up the hot tub using our cheaper EV night tariff. Currently turning it down in the week to 26C, will then turn it up to 39C at midnight tonight ready for use tomorrow. Should work out a bit cheaper to heat.
