Mum really wants a tablet, but it has to have office on it, a detachable keyboard with trackpad and play flash based Facebook games
Which pretty much means win8 and as much as I love win8 I find it hard to recommend a tablet due to there specs, price and lack of models.
Don't worry she uses win8 and likes it, so that's not an issue.

Does the atom handle flash games ok and any other slow downs?
Budgets only £400 which limits the options.

I have been looking into these tablets for a few weeks now. The general consensus is that they run office pretty well for general use and can even run photoshop for basic stuff, so should be able to run flash games ok. The atom is a lot more powerful than the old atoms in
netbooks and i have one of those and it runs general stuff fine.

Price wise the asus vivotab me400c seems pretty good for around £340 to £400, alternatively you could pick up a latitude 10 tablet from that online computer sellers outlet store for around £360

You won't get any for under £400 with a detachable keyboard with track pad, your only option is to buy a external bluetooth one, ones with keyboard seem to start at around £600 which is having a laugh for a atom processor imho.

I have an Acer w510 which came with a detachable keyboard. Got the 64gb model for £470ish online. You're not gonna find one with a keyboard for much less than that atm.

Any Cloverfield Atom tablet will run the things your mum wants quite easily. Office would be sold separately however...

Why doesn't she just get a Surface RT. It's £399, you get a free keyboard atm, Office is included, and I think it's got full flash on it now.

I didnt realise that, seems you are correct, instead of a white list, there's now a black list. Wonder what sites are on the blacklist.

Although I expect she would prefer full fat windows, office is the important one, but she also does family tree and a few others, which won't have apps or anytime in the near future.

When baytrail processors come out these tablets are going to be pretty damn good, that's not till the end of the year though :(
If you need legacy apps windows RT won't be any good, it's almost in firesale mode now, the XPS 10 windows RT is selling for £369 with keyboard, not sure if there's any futture in windows RT, would be hesitant to buy into it myself even at sub £200 with a keyboard.

Yeah I would definitely have waited for Baytrail (and to see what Haswell was like on tablets) if I could've. Performance will be much better and prices should also become more reasonable with different versions of the chips spread across various price points.

I have an OLD Atom tablet kicking around and to be honest it runs pretty nicely with Windows 8. I would imagine the newer Atoms are more than appropriate for general use.

I have an asus ME400C don't really play much on it but can try and give something ago for you if you want me to see how it fairs?

That would be great, but embarrassing.
But if you could try FarmVille out and if you can remeber the name the one where you cook. How does Iplayer and skygo on the desktop do? Are they doable with touch screen or would you need keyboard permantley attached.

The acer iconia w510 seem to fit the bill the closest, she said she might consider a laptop but really wants a tablet, which would be easy if it wasn't for flash & office.

I'm waiting for haswell, but she's wanted a tablet for ages, so I don't think she will wait any longer.

whats farmville....... :o Skygo works perfectly, sometimes its a little fiddly using the arrows to navigate around the planner but its perfectly doable, havent really played with iplayer much but have just had a quick go and was easy enough to use on the touch screen via desktop, I got it to replace a HP DM1 laptop and havent had any real problems using it, ive bought a bluetooth keyboard with touchpad for it should I ever need to do much in office or play a little half life :)
