Anyone interested in joining the french foreign legion?

it's quite common though for soldiers to move there when their country cuts down on the military.

'During the late 1980s, the Legion saw a large intake of trained soldiers from the UK. These men had left the British Army following its restructuring and the Legion's parachute unit was a popular destination. At one point, the famous 2eme REP had such a large number of British citizens amongst the ranks that it was a standing joke that the unit was really called '2eme PARA', a reference to the 2nd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment of the British Army.'

Just out of curiosity, thought I'd ask.

Personally it seems a nice thing to "run away to", and the constant and relentless work would certainly take the mind of "outside" woes.

Maybe for when I'm older :D

Just make sure you familiarise yourself with the idea before you start down that road, it isn't a walk in the park. :) I've seen some documentaries on it and it looked pretty damn hard to me. If you're meant to do it you will.

Contrary to belief they are actually pretty solid soldiers, unfortunately they are still french.

A lot of them aren't [French] actually - thus the Foreign Legion.

Anyway I'm not quite sure why someone from the UK would want to join them these days - they no longer accept criminals so the whole on the run/change identity/fresh start thing is no longer applicable and we've got some of the best military units in the world right here already. We've got a larger commitment to overseas operations than France and you'll likely have much better career prospects too.

I remember watching a documentary a few years ago and the training was epic, it was brutal, climbing a hill about 20 times, having to repeat it for the simplest mistake or looking tired, I doubt anyone without specialist army training could make it, physically or mentally.

Yes, but they will be fit before they start.

Everyone who joins the military will have a basic level of fitness greater than a 'normal' person as they have to train before they go in.

There's a three week session when you join that weeds out those who will or won't go on to basic training.

Can someone explain what 1RE 1REP etc mean? .....I', guessing 1st regiment , 2nd regiment para but not sure about the other 2.

13 DBLE is mechanized Infantry, 3 REI is standard infantry, 1 REP is Parachute Infantry, 1 REC is armoured cavalry 1 RE is C&C and the senior regiment. There are more, but I can't remember them.
