Ok basically I have a sever that I keep on 24/7, and atm it is easier to keep it not plugged in to monitors mice or keyboards. All I have on it atm is an ftp server so I can connect via that and see the progress of files.

What I want is a way to connect to it so I can see its desktop, hopefully in a window on my pc, and take control with my mice. Its always on the lan, and its local only so no worry about security.

Any ideas?

Usually i use logmein.com but if you dont want to install their software use Tight VNC

I've used VNC and LANdesk in the past. LANdesk was far better but pretty expensive from what I've heard

Try Windows Remote Desktop :) I hope I don't sound contrasending because obviously thats the most obvious choice but I don't understand why you've overlooked it?

Btw this is the wrong forum this should be in the Windows forum

If you run windows 2000 server or 2003 then use RDC. The problem with VNC and other RC programs (I use it before anyone starts slating me) is that they use artificial inputs, thus, programs like Zonealarm won't allow you to change settings or minimise windows, which is a complete pain.

tbh, I'd not use XP as a server, would you?

Yes and I have before. I can leave it on for weeks and it's fine apart from some slowdown. What you need to realise is this guy most likely isn't running intensive applications or a web server or anything.

For a serious server for intensive server side use I would definitely use either Linux or WIndows 2003 Server, if that answers your question.

edit: Oh and FYI the services of XP can be stripped down to be almost as resourceful as the server edition.
