Anyone made bao buns?

Thinking what to cook this weekend; the girlfriend is out all day which means I can faff and make a mess in the kitchen :D

Secondly I'll probably try using my Anova for the meat. Pork is the go-to but my girlfriend isn't always a fan (carnitas tacos went down well though), I wonder if beef short-rib or lamb might be interesting? :confused: Any sous-vide recipes kicking around? :)
 
There's a street food van in Cambridge which does steamed bao and they're really tasty. The classic filling would be belly pork, hosin sauce, mint and cucumber but you can put anything in them really, just match the meat with the sauce and garnish.

They don't look like the traditional steamed bao
 
Steamed bread tacos :D

Why do those recipes want you to steam the bread then fold it over a filling instead of filling the dough to make a dumpling then steaming it.

Is it still bao if you do that...
 
Char siu bao are traditionally white although there is another variation of this. That would be Char siu tan Bao which are golden yellow in colour and typically much larger about 2/3 times bigger.

However in certain restaurants and possibly bakeries they have mini ones. You can stick them in your mouth in one bite. Restaurant wise I have only ever seen this once and hence when I visit Hong Kong it the only restaurant I order char siu tan baos from and even then I order 6/7 portions as I can't stop eating them. I have yet to try any which match them for dinkiness and pure 'melt in your mouth' sensation. Even the ones the one in work while nice, don't even compare.

Tim Ho Wan, their mini Char Siu Boa, comes in a set of 3 has won a Michelin Star, at the time it was the cheapest Michelin Star restaurant in the world, I think it still is, or may be the Chicken and Rice place in Singapore is cheaper?

Beside Ladies Market. I know where we're going after I do the chore of shopping then..... My wife is a big congee fan so won't take any arm twisting!

Ladie's market is only good at night, it kinda sucks in the day….so I would go to the restaurant in the day first, preferably after lunch and before dinner for the quietest time.
 
When you get them in a restaurant you typically only get 2, 3 max if they are smaller size.

Be fine if it was just me, also need to feed hungry family. ;)

Think I can do it anyway, assuming a conventional steamer like below will work.

It's meant to be eaten as a part of dim sum and there would be other items for breakfast as opposed to have like 10 of them as a meal. Think of it like the roast potatoes in a roast dinner, and you don't have just a plate of roast potatoes, you have other items.
