The problem is that sweeteners aren't evidentially any better for people than sugar is and there's some evidence that they're worse.
I wouldn’t disagree (and given some of the evidence emerging maybe a lot of sweeteners should be taxed even higher) but it was the drinks manufacturers that decided to jam in the sweeteners instead, the tax was meant to either reduce the sugar in drinks or generate income to offset the health costs. They could have just reduced the sweetness of the drinks or upped their prices but they decided not too. Over in Germany a hugely popular drink is Bionade, it’s a non-alcoholic fermented soda and tastes distinctly less sweet but it is still very popular, so it show its can be done in other ways.

I had some brewed peach tea at lunch a few weeks ago. At least two people asked me if I was drinking beer at my desk. Very distinctive fermented flavour

Try Aldi Limanata - It is beautiful, quite low sugar despite taking really sweet (Not Sweetner Sweet, tastes Sugary Sweet)

I used to love Fanta Orange before they reduced all the Sugar, it's now rubbish... same applies to all Fanta drinks now.

Lemon Fanta, remember when we used to holiday in Spain early 2000's, the taste was amazing, couldn't be replicated at home, it was definitely a different recipe to the UK got, same as Heinz mayo, out there mayo on chips = amazing, back in UK, meh.

Going back to Spain later In The summer, was hoping to get some decent Fanta lemon, however your post has now made me anxious with fear that it's not going to be the same.

The moronic "sugar tax" we have just made everything taste worse. Has had no noticeable impact on health :/

No of course not, a fizzy drink is still "bad" for you even without the sugar.

Dare I say now people know there is less/no sugar in most it compels them to drink even more of the stuff, which surely is just as bad

I am not fully sure yet, but I think they may have messed about with the recipe for Aldi Vive Zx Cola, which before this was indistinguishable from Pepsi Max. Some more testing is required before I am sure but if they have buggered about with the recipe then this is an absolute calamity and dwarfs anything to do with Fanta of any kind. Praying it is either a temporary glitch in my taste buds, or a temporary thing at the factory. :(

We’re all in agreement that not just Fanta, but many many other brands of once awesome sodas/soft drinks have been gutted of their flavour and sugar content in favour of crap sweeteners.

I don’t really care for it, but at least they haven’t messed with the OG coke yet…yet

It's doing a fine job of raising revenue to help pay for the additional healthcare burden of the waddling diabetes-ridden masses. Although the £350 million or so raised is only a fraction of the £10 billion or 10% of the NHS budget which goes on diabetes treatment, primarily type 2 and induced by....you guessed it..... sugar consumption.

The sugar industry has done a wonderful job getting people addicted to sugar, now they can pay for the healthcare costs, same as the tobacco industry.

I'm curious how much money you think the NHS spends on treating people with sweetener-related health issues?

Being obese is a lifestyle error. It shouldn't all be getting loaded on to the NHS or the tax payer. Obese people should be taking responsibility and being educated to deal with it and learn self control. It's all about energy in, energy out. We don't see fat people in poor countries because they can't afford to ram down KFC ever day.

They’ve ruined Pepsi :(

My answer to the question “is Pepsi okay” is now no, not that I ever really drank much

Did you like it? I hope you told them it was a “small beer”.

One of my childhood memories was taking the “Pepsi Challenge”. Even as a kid, it didn’t take that sharp eyes and wits to see that they poured the coke from a one of a number of warm opened cans that had been sitting in the sun but the Pepsi was from a fresh can pulled from a bucket of ice. The figures were still not that skewed in Pepsi’s favour though - I bet advertisers/psychologists would have a field day analysing it.
