Anyone modded a 24 port POE switch to reduce noise?

I'd go for a 24 port fanless non Poe, then add a 10 port Poe.

You can get silent 40x20mm fans from Noctua, but they're achingly expensive and very low speed.

Thanks for that...After a recce of my network and moving some bits around I only need 3 POE ports...So I have ordered a 4 Port POE switch and a 24 port Silent Gigabit switch.

Thanks for the input and making me think outside the box :)

If you only had three PoE devices connected then it probably wouldn't be getting hot enough to need the fan(s) in the first place. It's possible you could have got away with disconnecting them completely or inserting resistors to slow the fans down to a level where the noise was acceptable.

It wasn't a POE switch but an HP Data Dentre Edge Switch (in my home) to reduce noise -- simply took it apart, identified the full spec of the three fans inside, then found replacement fans that drew the less current (so not to blow anything) and had a lower noise rating and plugged them in. (Im not a fan designer, so they might be standard, but the connectors were the same, all worked fine and that eas 6 plus years ago) I can still just about hear it, but its no longer a hovvercraft.

Here is a pic...I have bought a silent switch and its in situ...I took the old one out the cab and took the top off..Looks to me to be an easy swap out of the fans....?

I can easily return the silent one...

You might need to change position of cables in the plug
I had this when i did a HP procurve and a UPS in the past :)

in my ups for example the black and red had to be swapped over
i.e. the positive and negative needed to be swapped(cannot remember exactly but used a multimeter to check at the time )
So `IF` new fans do not work you can have an `idea` why not :)

Just rechecked my switch
Seems i have used a `fanmate` and cut/spliced the wires to be able to adjust noise/speed of fan
What voltage is the existing fans?

I’ll check in a bit...just got a few things to finish up for work....working from home right now...:)

Actually from memory, they look almost identical to the ones I swapped out - it worked a treat, and the fan plugs looked identical

You should be able to pop the fan's pins out and swap them round as needed

Im going to see if it boots without the fans connected...and then monitor temps....if I can run it passively then bonus...

If not I’m tempted to drill 2 x 120mm holes in the top of the chassis and have two 120mm fans on top, one over the PSU and the other over the heat sinks drawing air out....

I have a 120mm Gentle Typhoon knocking about...
