Anyone own/driven an M135i?

I've got one of these on order. After several years of 'Should I or should I not' and plenty of well-deserved abuse from Fox, I'm finally in the position to justify owning and running a performance car, and boy am I glad I resisted the temptation and waited!

The moment this was announced last year I knew it was going to be something special. I had looked at the 125i M Sport previously which also has a cracking engine but the M135i was the icing on the cake. For those who are unfamiliar, BMW claim 320bhp, 37mpg and 0-62 in 4.9s. (Independent reviews have found 0-60 in 4.5s). That level of performance is frankly awesome for a Hatch and I'm anticipating the running costs will be far lower that what one might expect for such a car.

Being an early-twenty-something I haven't driven a huge amount of performance cars in my life and I don't purport otherwise. However when I test drove this thing it was rapid. It felt ludicrously fast to me. The 6 cylinder engine sounds fantastic and the exhaust growls, bangs and pops in a similar fashion to a JCW. What really surprised me however was the fact you can flick this thing into Comfort mode and you suddenly get a car that's refined, quiet, comfortable and easily capable of hitting mid 30s on the old MPG. It's definitely a Jekyll & Hyde!

So what is the catch? Yes, it's the looks. Despite looking significantly better in the flesh than in photographs, it still is not the best looking car in the world. The MK6 Golf GTI looks far nicer but you know what, I don't really care. I also like the understated, Q-Car appearance. It has all the hints to suggest to anyone looking there's a monster under the bonnet but it isn't over the top and it doesn't scream 'Look at me' like, say, a Focus RS does. I think BMW have got the styling spot on with their recent M Performance and full on M Cars. I did however opt for Estoril Blue which stands out but it really is a fantastic colour!

Finally: THIS IS NOT AN M CAR! :) Loads of people have been comparing this to the 1M. The 1M is supposed to be a more-hardcore track car. This is supposed to be a daily-driver that gets you from A to B quickly. The fact that it can keep up with cars like the 1M and even considerably more powerful cars is just a huge credit to BMW.

So anyone else driven one? Opinions/thoughts?

The wait continues

The M135i is an outstandingly good package. The 'BMW M performance' branding is cynical at best but the car itself is brilliant and the engine is fantastic. Enjoy, becuase it'll be brilliant.

The most amazing thing about it is quite how expensive it isn't. £30k for a 1 Series doesnt sound cheap, and I guess it's not, but spec up an Astra VXR and its barely any cheaper.

Agree 100% - seriously tough company car decision between this and my 328i, in the end the extra cost (tax) and the fact I probably wouldn't want a 3 door 1 series for potentially four years was too much, but what a package!

Anyone buying a Golf/Astra/Megane/etc. needs to think long and hard about it now.

I happen to think the orange one looks rather nice?

*to run and hide or not?*

I'm not a huge fan but I completely understand why people opt for it. It's unique that's for sure! EB is a fantastic colour but judging from BMW fan forums everyone with a 1 Series M Sport is speccing it which makes it seem somewhat less exclusive. To be fair the choice of colours for the M135i isn't fantastic.

Fox and Ste, I am puzzled by how BMW's competitors will respond to the aggressive pricing of the M135i. I doubt VW will care as the Golf GTI will still sell by the bucket load as a lot of the people who buy them won't look at anything else. I might be worried if I was Ford, Vauxhall or Renault though. Just knowing that a couple of grand more could buy you the M135i must make a lot of people think twice about how far they can really stretch their budget. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this. Incidentally I very nearly ordered a Golf GTI Edition 35 last year but the engine wasn't really anything special and far, far too thirsty for the performance offered. It did look the business though.

The M135 isn't a GTI, ST or VXR competitor anyway, it's in another performance league. Would be more akin to the RS3 which makes it look even better value for money.

I couldn't get over the looks personally (i'd bet the car will get a fairly quick facelift) but i'm sure it's a stonking machine. I also couldn't look by Estoril, it's just......right.

A friend has a white auto one which I have driven a few times now, it struggles to put the power down in the first 2 or 3 gears but once moving it is very fast and handles well. Point to point in the current weather where the roads are continually covered in a damp top layer it struggles a bit but I can't wait to have a proper go in the dry.

I can't help but think after having my sister's S3 for a week that a RHD M135i X drive would be a better bet, best of both worlds with RWD handling and the extra traction of 4wd when required. I suspect, in Scotland at least, it would be the quicker and more pleasant drive for 8-9 months of the year also taking more sales away from the S3. It might happen now they have expanded the x drive models in the last couple of weeks.

You would think but from what I've heard BMW seem to be shifting them at quite a rate. I've been on forums and people are now being quoted 6-7 months for delivery as BMW can't produce enough of them to meet the demand. My estimated delivery date is the end of March but I won't be surprised if the dealer calls up to inform me of delays based on what I've read. If my experiences translate to what is actually happening with sales of the 1 across the entire range, there would be little reason for BMW to incur extra costs and rush out a facelift. Even more so given the rumours of the 2 series where they will likely address what people disliked about the 1.

Personally, I'm willing to bet people will get used to the looks. Everyone thought the E60 was ugly when it first came out and that perception gradually changed over time.

I would buy a used M3 simply because it does everything the 135 does but better...

Depends on how you re going to finance it I suppose.

Except it doesn't. The M135i is:

a) More modern
b) More practical
c) More economical
d) Cheaper to own and run

The M3 is a very different proposition. It is more special, but as a result, it is more expensive to own.

Is this available as coupe and hatch?

I seem to remember that it's only the coupe for some reason. Did I imagine that?

I saw a coupe 135i when my dad was picking up his new car. 17k I think it was, I was doing mental finance calculations within 30 seconds.

No, it is only available as a 3 door or 5 door hatch.

You did - but you can be forgiven for that.

The 135i was available as a Coupe or a Convertible based on the previous 1 Series model. It is still available today as BMW have yet to replace the Coupe or Convertible.

The M135i is based on the all-new 1 Series.

The M3 is a completely different ball game. I couldn't afford the running costs (or risk the uncertainty associated with them) and I personally think it's just too much for someone of my age/experience. I would love to do it properly in the future if my financial situation allows. I think a lot of people allow their passion to override rational decisions and end up with a poor example of a car they can't really afford. That doesn't interest me.

Sounds like a great call.
As for it looks, well I happen to actually like the look of the 1 series, which has really grown on me. The new version just looks even better. Against that, I find the Golf looks as dull as ditchwater, but hey, I also prefer Japanese girls to blondes.

Thats because its on high performance summer tyres, and your mate and you have a heavy foot :)

In the dry/not so cold it is extremely good

And having the back end out is half the fun of any RWD car

admittedly I have been lucky with limited snowfall in central Scotland so far this year, but since picking up my 3dr manual last November I have never had any real moments thus far
