Anyone pay for gadget insurance?

I have insurance on my iPhone, would do the same with any smart phone these days due to their cost. I don't understand why so few people do tbh.

I pay £6 a month from Protect Your Bubble with Loss Cover.

I use Insureandgo's gadget insurance - £70 covers my iPhone and DSLR for everything but me misplacing it, which isn't a worry since I've never lost anything valuable in my entire life.

I'm reading the T&Cs Shayper.
The bits below are for laptop insurance.

You're not covered for theft "from anywhere other than Your Home or Permanent Home Address unless involving forcible and violent entry or exit"

Also not covered for theft - "any fax machines, photographic equipment or hi-fi equipment which can be used in conjunction with Laptop Computer Equipment or any other equipment or computer accessories;"

There's lots of little exclusions like these with policies which erode what you actually end up covered for, meaning that you can be covered for a lot less than you think you are... and more importantly most times you might claim you'd be refused.

Not in my terms and conditions :)

Because we've read the terms and conditions, and because we can apply simple mathematics to say that in a 2 year ownership of a phone that's £144. Even if you do have to make a claim there's sometimes upper limits above the value of the phone, there's big excesses and the T&C will try to exclude lots of reasons for claiming.

My cover only excludes loss or damage as a result of the phone being left unattended.

I am with American express my essentials £9.99 a month, any device worth over £250 has to be registered with them first, you can claim 3 times a year, currently in the process of claiming for the cracked screen on my 4S, they seem to have accepted the claim so we will see how we get on.

No excesses and i read the T&C's and there doesn't seem to be too many clauses. http://www.americanexpress.com/uk/p...essentials/pdfs/MyEssentialsnonCPBrochure.pdf

Not sure if you have to have an American express card + been a member for a while to get it like

That sounds like a better one Max, if they exclude people because they rely on them not registering ahead of time then if you have the foresight to register then perhaps you're past how they exclude people. Even still, £120 a year isn't cheap :/

insurance is just a -EV bet against yourself... unless you have additional information to suggest that either you're a moron or an easy target for frequent muggings (in which case it might be a +EV bet)

in general it only makes sense for things you really can't afford to replace/pay for - i.e. medical/travel insurance (because hospital bills and a 10k medical flight home could wipe most of your savings), buildings insurance, car insurance (covering potentially large costs to 3rd parties) etc..

At the moment I can't afford to replace a lot of my electronic goods: My PC has been an extended purchase over time, and it was damaged or stolen it would be a huge outgoing to replace it. Same with my DJ gear, which is also covered.

Yea seems a good way of covering themselves, they ask you for the imei of the phone and with my ipad they wanted the serial number as well.

I have registered all my familys phones and mine and my dads ipad on it.

I had my phone stolen in london just before christmas and i decided it was about time i started covering myself for these events when your carrying around £500+ phones

With my 4s though i am not sure how its going to pan out.. the phone had a previous fault anyway which i was going to get swapped at the apple store (dodgy mute switch) but obviously once the screen is cracked apple wont have anything to do with it.. if they repair the screen and its not done by apple is the warranty going to be void? then potentially i get the phone back and its still got the dodgy mute switch and i cant swap it... i might tell them the mute switch is dodgy when i sent it to be repaired and see what they do about that, say its since it was dropped... they might just send me a new one then.

I use Protect Your Bubble for my Galaxy S2. £4 a month. They do other gadgets too.
I have home contents insurance. £60 a year.
I use Photoguard for my camera kit (£1.35k worth). £77 a year.

house insurance me for about 3k goods outside my home.

claiming for them is a mare though. Recently claimed for a phone that fell into the canal, my first ever claim and its just a mare, having phone insurance would have seen a replacment next day, im 4 weeks down the road with nothing

You're required to have car insurance by law.

If you haven't got it you shouldn't be driving.

It's not something that "only makes sense for things you really can't afford to replace/pay for".

in which case it might make sense for you... tis still -EV but if you're on a low income I guess you might have to just fork out for it all the same....

I get gadget insurance through my bank, for £9.50 a month I get cover for the ipad, Laptop and both mine and the girlfriends phones, I also get an interest free overdraft if I want it and better rates on my savings account

Was talking in general about insurance - car insurance being one of the examples where it obviously makes sense.

The fact that it is also required is irrelevant to the point. I'm well aware that its required thanks...
