and if so... what amazing and daring tales do you have to share with us, while we sit around the fire, drinking warm wine and eating the last of the cold chicken.

tell us.

What is the benefit of Linux on it?

could potentially throw your pc out the nearest window and use the ps3 for stuff although in reality there isnt enough drivers for things like printers and other things people may use out yet

I thought performance when running linux was severely neutered? That would limit a lot of things I use a PC for :(

The Linux OS you install communicates with the hardware via Sony's hypervisor. This is intended to keep you from h4xx0ring your b0xx0r and playing games on it. However, I bet the performance would be more than adequate for browsing the web, listening to music, watching videos, etc.

I think this is true. As the Cell processor, though extremely good at FP calculations, is not particularly adept at standard integer calculations, e.g. running a desktop.

Not what I meant but an interesting point, So the hypervisor actively restricts performance along with:

Yeas i was thinking that but i have 10 demos loads of music + trailers + photos,

But like i said im getting the OS now i have all the other files i need which iv burnt to CD plus a good guide

Its just me having the balls now really :p

i have the required YDL disc and the "otheros.bld" file that you need on a SD card or cdr,i have a usb keyboard and a MS (lol) intellimouse which all works on the dash, i've backed up my saves and gone to the other OS option and let it search for the "otheros.bld" file - this is did and found, then i quit, lol, i ain't got the guts to go through with it, also i know nothing about installing things in linux and it looks complicated and is putting me of doing it, and i'm thinking about swapping out the HD 1st for a 120gig one

Things you can do in Linux at present

Watch xvid,divx
download with torrents (good for getting them xvids, divx)
run mame,snes emulators.
Stream from PC, instant messanging, office, firefox browser, so yes basic pc needs

is the sony OS installed on the hard drive? or will it just go back to how it was last friday morning if I completely wipe the hard drive?

If it's the latter, send me a link to the guide and I'll do it.

In the same position as you. Temped to install but never had any experience in linux/unix. I can set up windows, servers, networks etc but this Linux stuff is new to me.

You do have to format your hard drive as it creates a new partition for the Linux OS, like installing Windows. By default it gives you 10gig to partition, I back up my save games to my SD card before I did anything. Lost all my demos but I downloaded them all again.
The Sony and Linux OS boot files are stored in the PS3 internal memory, so if you remove the hard drive you can still boot into Linux or the Sony XMB. If any of you people decided to try it and get stuck at the prompt screen hold the power button on for 5 seconds and console will boot back to the Sony screen.

afaik they jsut wont give the linux devs permission to use the gfx chip :(

or the gfx chip just wont work , basically you wont be able to do gfx intensive things :/

media playing and open office etc seem to be working for people
