Anyone recommend a mesh which shows per device usage (real time)?

The Amplifi twin pack is roughly £60 more than the Google Wi-Fi twin pack, you've spent quite a lot of time asking the question that you already know the answer to ;)

I did maths A-Level sometime ago, but I'm still fairly sure £99 (for the Amplifi Instant Home Mesh) is significantly less than £229 (for the Google Wifi Mesh)... :) Let alone the three pack I may well (ideally need) for my house...

Not really. It’s a dead product line. It’s not being developed beyond security fixes. The new WIFI6 Alien uses the newer UBiOS framework and isn’t backwards compatible so I’m not sure I’d pay £99 for a dead parrot. Even if it was a Norwegian Blue.

On offer at moment for £99 down from £199 ;)

Is there any UniFi kit on half-price special offer at the moment? I doubt it. It sells. Amplifi has never been a strong seller. All the reviews were negative or ‘meh’ at best. In truth, it’s a dreadful product. And it’s dead from a development point of view. So only buy it if you are 100% happy that it does what you want, because it’s never getting any better.

I can confirm that Google Nest WiFi does show live stats for wired and wireless devices. Currently the main hog is the Chromecast Ultra at around 50 mbs as my wife is using it for Stadia.

You've got the nest variant have you? And that of course has all the same usage stats over different periods that I like, along with better performance than the older Google Wi-Fi units.

What do you think of the nest one? I wouldn't use the automation!

Hard disagree. It was too expensive at launch and not marketed very well. It's a fairly niche product but it's been working well for me.

Well, that’s the wonder of choice. But if it truly does what they say it does why isn’t it competing at £299 with the Google product? It’s not because it’s badly marketed, it’s because it’s a poor product. When they’re selling them off at half-price (and that’s an already heavily discounted price) alarm bells should be ringing LOUD.

The Amplifi Mesh HD system does exactly that? Thousands of positive reviews. Just because it's not as 'big' as google doesn't mean it's a duff product.

The Instant Mesh system is £140 on Ubquiti's EU site, it was always positioned as a cheaper product. Some seller on amazon has popped up selling them for £100 but if you go on that seller's own website it's listed as a refurb item so maybe that's the alarm that should be ringing loud. If you look at every other retailer the price is 140-150. Not the great fire sale of a rubbish product that you're suggesting.

Unless you've actually used something, calling it a dreadful product is nothing more than the speculation of someone that's just done some googling.

This is a good video comparing the performance of the various systems available.

1. The company I work for is a Ubiquiti reseller and I tested Amplifi when it first came out in the middle of 2016. It was dreadful then and it’s dreadful now. As an example of how ashamed UBNT are of the product, Amplifi isn’t a forum on their own Community. It’s completely separate (and effectively dead) Set of forums all by themselves.

2. And you do realise that’s 2400 Amazon reviews WORLD WIDE in a bit over 3 years. Amazon do that when there are multiple versions that don’t have enough individual country reviews. It’s done to sell the product when the product isn’t selling.

By all means, keep on fooling yourself that Amplifi is an incredible product. It’s not, and that’s the reason it’s in the bargain bin at the moment.

If you look at these forums across the board you tend to see people recommending stuff they’ve bought. And if some other people buy it then they try it and if it’s good they also recommend it. There is no critical mass support for Amplifi. Why do you think that is?

There are two UK based master resellers (there are several who pretend to be UK but actually ship the product from Poland, Latvia or Slovenia) and they don’t keep Amplifi on stock, because it doesn’t sell. It wasn’t a good product four years ago and it’s still not a product I’d recommend.

I like it. It was very easy to set up though it took a while for the firmware updates to complete. We have one point in the kitchen which the family loves as they use the assistant and play music on it. That point projects a nice field in the garden too. One niggle I had was the lack of features for power users, there's no VPN so I had to set one up myself on my raspberry pi.
Wifi performance is fine though my needs have reduced somewhat, I no longer own a laptop and only use a tablet. Anything that needs bandwidth (the chromcast ultra and raspberry pi) are wired in.

Thanks...

Yeh, the question is getting a three piece Google Wifi setup vs a two piece Nest setup. ie: They're supposed to cover approx the same area.

Are both your units downstairs? And they project/cover OK upstairs?

The nice thing about the Google units is they do offer ethernet ports for wired backhaul. But of course the Nest units are more modern and have higher spec's accordingly.

Do you have to use Nest software to install them? And once setup can you just use the supposedly superior Google Wifi App? eg: To look at device usage over periods (eg: An Xbox's usage over the past week).

BTW - To add to my findings as regards which mesh units offer what data usage features (eg: per device/realtime/historic), seems Eero is very poor. Shame!

I installed and manage a eero network for my cousin as he doesnt have a clue so I have both that app and my own google wifi. I can confirm the eero app is lacking compared to the google wifi app. I think a 2 pack of the nest wifi or 3 pack of google wifi would do you well.

Thanks...

Yes both are downstairs as the signal can’t reach the back of the house from the living room and it’s nice to have signal in the garden too. I use a combination of Google Home and Google WiFi apps to manage them and they are visible in both.

Have to say, love my Amplifi / Mesh system lol :D for a basic home setup it works fine replaces the default ISP router and at least it works flawlessly unlike my Netgear stuff. But agreed, it won't see any new features and it definitely shouldn't be bought if you need to do even a small amount of tweaking/customisation. It is overpriced imo at the >£250 cost and you could get a lot more for your money. But a plug in, setup and go, have to say it is pretty good from that aspect, I've been more than happy with it personally.
