ok guys do to our lan tournaments are starting to use TFT monitor's over crt's now i'm thinking of upgrading to a tft to get used to it! so thinking of upgrading to a 20-22inch widescreen but i need to know that cs1.6 can be run properly without the need to stretch it? as most of the lans use non widescreen monitors!

so in short spec me a high performance 20-22inch monitor that will run cs1.6 smoothly?

You need something with aspect scaling... Dell2007WFP will run it in its real res no stretching iirc.

1.6 isn't about looks you do realise? that's why i usually play either 640x480 or 800x600, anyone know if running these res's on a widescreen would be a problem? or should i just go for a fast 19inch non-widescreen like the 2ms viewsonic?

Most screens will just stretch the image for a 4x3 res. Ones with 1.1 pixel mapping will create a border round the image. I've played many games including cs 1.6 and source at 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 due to having poor graphics card. The image is stretched and i have a Belinea 102035W (which is the Belinea 102030W with DVI).

hmm, i'm looking at the new samsung 226bw after the reviews i've seen! did you try running in window mode? does the stretch make it look bad? do you loose much visibility in game?

I'm interested in knowing this too!

On that widescreen gaming site it says:
Counter-Strike (version 1.6) Native Vert -
Counter-Strike: Condition Zero Native Vert -

But I have no clue whatsoever to that that means lol

No you don't lose any visibility when you put it into a low 4/3 res. It just makes everything look a bit fatter and easier to hit  800x600, 1024x768 look pretty bad but 1280x1024 is ok.

Window mode would be like 1.1 pixel mapping. You get a small 4.3 box on your screen with no image stretching. I'd prefer it to stretch.

That Samsung looks really good, you should wait and see what people say about the viewing angles tho since its a TN panel.

hmmm well as i'm a high level gamer, and play in a lot of competitions i need a monitor that is going to perform as close to a crt as possible, so i'm debating wether widescreen is what i really need at the minute? asthetics are of no real value to me as i'l be looking at whats on the screen rather than the screen itself!

so with this in mind could you recommend a monitor? maybe the viewsonic 19" 2ms or the NEC 19" GX2?

if you post a thread on widescreengaming please can you link to it from her cau'se I'd be interested to see what they say to this over there :)

Cheers,

G

My friend has that Viewsonic, very good gaming screen i'd recommend that if you don't want a widescreen. I'm pretty sure the NEC GX2 with OptiClear clear means it has a shinny screen so you'd have reflections on the screen like a CRT if the room is too bright.

I like gaming in widescreen because you get to see more of the action, if you play at the optimum res. Newer games support 16:10. A 20" widescreen will be very much like gaming on a 17" screen with a bigger field of view. A 22" widescreen will be more like a 19" and mean things will be bigger and easier to see on the screen.

If it was my choice i'd prob wait and get the Samsung SM-226BW 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Silver/Black or a 22" with 5ms response time if i couldn't wait.

ahh thanks for the input, and yeah i know the GX2 have the glossy screens as our sponsored lan centre in harrow provides them for us, i've found them fine so long as their is no direct light shining toward them! with widescreen it could mean that it will mess cs 1.6 up and stretch the image and make it look poor, i will need the screen to run either 800x600 or 640x480!

i'm starting to lean toward the vx922

**edit

at hardcore are you a high level gamer or a social public gamer in 1.6?

it means that it doesnt stretch the image, however you lose a bit of vertical viewing angle in how the game implements widescreen. the alternative i think is horz+ which means you gain horizontal viewing angle, which is preferred. it probably explains it better on widescreengamingforum...

im a social gamer but i dont play 1.6 as im a source addict lol but yes 1.6 can run 1440x900 and its not stretched AFAIK, im nearly 100% sure of this as HL and HL:S can run 1440x900 16:10

The half-life engine is probably almost 10 years old now, it just feels nicer in lower res, originally the crosshair size was fixed depending on what res you used which was also a factor, along with being able to use 100+ refresh rates. I guess on TFT it would probably not be much of a benefit to still use lower resolutions because the refresh rate is still going to be 60hz, still just feels nicer though xD
