Anyone seeing car insurance pricing increases?

Mine went up by 50% (£300 -> £450) this time last year despite shopping around (something about new legislation preventing better deals for new customers?). My renewal quote this month was 50% more again (£650), found a better price online, phoned to see if they could match it, and they got it down to £420

"they" being who exactly? Aviva were not interested in matching my home insurance quote.

This was Hastings for car insurance.

We've been with Halifax for home insurance the last 5-6 years, and their renewal price has always been within a few £ of the previous year, plus they were really easy to deal with when we had to make a claim

Yep funny you mention that as mine is due within a few days...went up by £300 despite me having another years NCB & no claims whatsoever.....now I upped the mileage they want £1340 (from £800). I shopped around but it seems the days of cheap insurance are almost over...

What are some of you driving to be paying £1k for insurance? Or is it an age thing?

Probably some eco **** box LOL... I can drive all kinds of vehicles, including most performance cars, for ~£300/year but quotes for small eco cars are ridiculous - well over a grand :(

not car insurance but Aviva just tried to hike my house insurance by 25%. Shopped around, got better cover for substantially less with a different company. Aviva's priority appears to be shareholder dividends, not customers.
Same here with our AA contents insurance jumped up by about 30%, moved to Onecall with substantially more cover for the same price as we paid for the AA last year.

Er - that's the priority of every company with publicly traded shares. The priority for the rest is more money for the boss. OK, that kind of covers the publicly traded companies as well. Seriously, that's how capitalism works. You function as the customer is to open your wallet and shut up.

Well it was looking like I would be paying more than previous but today's search on Compare the market revealed a new contender - Moja insurance, part of Axa. Their price was cheaper than my last year price with Shiela's wheels at £375 all in (£300 total excess). Its an online only provider except for claims, but part of Axa so fingers crossed it will be ok if the time comes. Ive given it a shot.

So all in all it turned out ok, paid less than last year.

If you look at publically available data, last year was a rough one for Motor Underwriters. Nobody had adequately priced in claims inflation despite claims from many that they had, and then Q4 was a bad one weather wise. Wouldn't surprise me if we see a 5%-10% correction.

You're not wrong. Same thing here, renewal coming up and with no requested changes to my policy which was £800 last year it's £1,000 this one despite going from 2 to 3 years no claims with Direct Line...
Compare the Market has some £600 to £750 quotes but probably the sort of places you don't want to be with if something did go wrong.

Esure last year, £256. Flawless year of driving, average mileage, nothing changed but I've aged a year, renewal £319.
Hit Go Compare (as I am a bit of a fan of the £250 excess cover thing) - Aviva - £258.
Online chat with Esure, we can give you a £20 discount - no thanks, please don't renew the insurance. All sorted with Aviva.

Mine went from £282 to £460 at renewal, same car no claims. Was able to get the same cover for £250 through a comparison website however. When I called to cancel the autorenewal Admiral offered to price match the £250 which I thought was pretty cheeky.

And to think it was made illegal for companies to offer an artificially high price when a lower price was available.:D

Surprised at that, though Admiral seems to be making some effort to be more reasonable lately, when various friends/family have had big increases with them the "best" they could do when trying to get the price down or in response to cancelling was still 30-40% higher than other quotes.

Personally I've had good results with Admiral so far - on my multi-car cover the first vehicle (most expensive) is full price and the subsequent ones are 30-40% off.
