Anyone seen 'city of god'?

Since this thread has risen from the dead, might as well comment to say it is a great film, well acted and very powerful. I prefer to watch a film with subtitles generally as I find it distracts me less than watching the usual bad dubbing that goes on in its place. There are a few examples of decent dubbing I'm sure but many don't even come close to matching up with the screen action or indeed the subtitles if you happen to have both dubbing and subtitles on. :)

Hardly a comparison is it.
And why's it so hard for you comprehend that some people don't like subtitles? I don't mind personally but can understand why people wouldn't.

The film was ok, not as great as i expected though.

I've just never seen how it's effort to read subs - after about five minutes I completely forget they're there, and I might as well be watching the film in English - it literally makes no difference to my enjoyment of a film, and I've never understood why a lot of people go 'hmm, I would watch that but it's subtitled' - unless they're not very good readers.

I'm with Mohinder. It really is no hassle to watch a film with subtitles, and infact i seem to find myself drawn into those films even more. It's a lot easier to get immersed in the world.

Saying "shame its subtitles" reads like you're saying "shame it's foreign". Which is an absolutely daft comment to make.

couple of years later . . . .

great film, if you haven't seen it and don't mind subtitles then highly recommended!

Inspired by Paulo Lins's fact-based novel, this three-act chronicle of gangland rivalry on the streets of Rio de Janeiro resists the temptation to glamorise crime, as so many New York Mob movies have done. Yet director Fernando Meirelles's audacious visual style may disconcert those expecting a neorealistic approach to the story of a teenage hoodlum's rise and fall. It invites comparisons with GoodFellas, as the often explosive and meticulously designed action spans the late 1960s to the early 80s. But the no-holds-barred authenticity of the non-professional juvenile cast and Meirelles's edgy social commitment make it a wholly unique experience.

lol well done finding this thread.
Thanks for the heads up not seen it since it came out. Fantastic Film :D

Holy mother of repost.
I may need to watch the DVd again, although living in Rio de Janeiro I don't have the same urge to watch it as much as I did back in blighty:(.

A friend had it on DVD and it was v. good.

I haven't a clue whether I watched a subtitled version, if anything I think it was a dubbed version :/ Was still good either way
