Anyone stepped up from 24" to 30"?

if 1:1 scaling is good, out of the Dell`s 3008WFP supported resolutions, how low would be too low for comfort?

i upgrade from a benq 24" to a dell 3007" and to start with it was a mixed blessing, but now i love it.
i got it because ive moved house and due to lac of room i didn't have room for a big TV and my computer in the room i want them in so decided to get a big monitor that could do both (use on the computer and watch TV/films)

from a games pov ive had no problem running any game at full res at the highest setting (but without any AA as i fell at this res you simply don't need AA) we talking lotro, tabula rasa,cod4,bioshock,supreme commander, in fact any of the good major games there been this last 6 months. but then i am running 2*8800ultra in sli mode + the rest of my machine is top spec as well, i did run it (dell3007) for a while on my old machine when i was building my new one and again it ran all the games i play then a a good enough frame rate at the highest res. just had to turn down the detail a bit (they still looked dam good tho)

for watching TV/films this was were i felt a bit peeved. with the benq i could just stick in a BR or HD DVD and watch the film, how ever the 3007 you can't do that, you need to change the res down to 1280*800 do be able to watch high def hdcp content, that meant not only did i have to swap res back and forward but when i was watch high def stuff i was watching it at a lower res. there is away round it but it means you will be no longer "legal".
i believe it because while the DVI has hdcp on it, because the 3007 needs dual-linked DVI
and only one dvi is hdcp, i may be wrong and iam sure if i am someone will correct me

now that ive gotten used to the 3007 i am v happy with it ive sorted out all my problems with it and it is a v good monitor one more thing about general use. this monitor is big, i really mean it it got a lot of screen area this means (and iam almost ashamed to say this) i keep loosing my mouse pointer, iam serious at times it almost like playing 'where's wally'

basically, HDCP is a pain in the arse lol. while i can watch 1080p on my 24" monitor over vga no problems, i cant do it over hdmi to my 40" sony because HDPC will throw a fit and shut powerdvd down. even though i have a HDCP card, drivers, displays, retail bluray and hd-dvd discs....... its a complete joke.

Why is that? Is it because the screen can't scale or what? Surely at the very least it could manage 1:1 and display 1080P over a portion of the screen.

I've been looking into getting one but would be miffed if i couldn't watch HDDVD's in all their glory. :(

Well it's simalar to what you get on a 24" screen, it looks tiny at anything below 1600*1200, 1680*1050 ends up looking like what you get on a 19" widescreen display but looks smaller because it's being displayed in middle of your screen surrounded by black bars.

If you have to use 1:1 scalling then what exactly is the point in having a 30" screen when you will end up using 50% or less of it when gaming. lol

its and issue with the 8800 not he moniter when it comes to the HDCP i think , i know it was with the G80 based boards i have no idea with the G92's atleast i hope nvidia fix it with the 9800 boards but with the 3008 you could do 1080p i would think if you lowered the res to 1900x1200 then it should only need a single link DVI ?

i had an 8800 with my 3007 when i had it and the problem is HDCP doesnt work over dual link dvi (not sure about newer models) but the above post is right you'd have to drop down to single link dvi and use the 1920x1200 res to get 1080p to your screen a REAL PITA with the size of the monitor.

i found for dvd's and the like the res was just too high and stretching things across the screen looked horrible. so ive decided to go for the 27" @ 1920x1200 to get a sort of middle ground between size and res.

I think that is down to the graphics card not the TV?

If the 3008 is as good as the 2407 scaling will be fine, I have to run at 1050 for Crysis and it looks good.

Thats because 1680*1050 is not a large drop from the native resolution of 1920*1200, but it's a massive drop from 2560 x 1600 so it will look like crap on a 30" display.

Even 1920*1200 is a bigger drop from 2560 x 1600 so even that will worse on a 30" screen then 1680*1050 on a 24" display.

Whats is the cpu, mobo and ram for your machine, reason I ask is I would love a great sli machine to run a 30" monitor, thanks

What mobo, cpu and ram have you?, reason is I would love a fast sli setup

it nothing out of the norm, 680i, q6600(clocked to just over 3), 2*gtx8800(slightly over clock about = to ultra), 4 meg of ocz reaper memory

i had a bit of bad luck when building this machine, went thu 4evga 680i before i got one that worked right, 2 sets of memory

if you really looking a sli machine you might be better waiting till the 790 comes out.
me if i was doing it again with todays hardware i think i would go for one of the new intel chipsets and crossfire

Always read horror stories about 680i; must have been lucky with mine.

Booted first time with SLI graphics cards, overclocked E6600 to 3.2Ghz and its ran perfectly ever since. Had it for a year now.

I'm planning to get this monitor for the following reasons:

- ZOMG IT'S BIG AND SEXY
- Plenty of inputs (im planning to use displayport.. assuming the 9800 cards are using it!)
- Decent scaling

So yah, some nice improvements from the 3007 (which has awful backlight bleeding and sod-all inputs as well as poop resolution scaling).
