As the title states :)

I am having a little mess about creating abstract backgrounds, current one has taken over 9 hours to render and is currently on 88%.

Does anyone know how to speed up bryce? Or have any other software recommedations that will take full advantage of my setup?

P.s. Feel free to post anything you have created if you want to, wouldn't mind some inspiration!

I use Vue 7.5 infinite, gave up on Bryce years ago and started with Vue 3 on a cover disk.

Vue is 64bit and multithreaded. It can be a bit flaky at times, but 7 has been one of the most stable versions to date. That's probably because it started life as an enthusiast bit of software like Bryce and VistaPro but it's gone all professional now, being used by Lucasarts and in many films. The makers e-on have split the product line into professional and enthusiast. For a freebie version visit their enthusiast site at http://www.cornucopia3d.com/products/vue/vue_7_pioneer/?page=0 and for a trial version of the professional software at http://www.e-onsoftware.com/

I think the latest version of Bryce is now multithreaded but I can't see if it is 64-bit. I could never get-on with the Bryce interface as it is so much different to all other 3d software I have used. Anyway, even in Vue rendering can take a long time if you ramp up the details. Even when I use all 3 quads, a high quality image with complex lighting can easily take 10-20hrs to render.

This took about 15mins to set the scene and about an hour to render (only used a single quad as it's pretty basic) at 1900x1200 originally...I was messing about because my friend had just bought an artists mannekin to replicate some of the Danboard shots :D

I used it a few years ago. I created some pretty good pictures with it, unfortunately they are long gone - I wish I'd have kept them!

Anyway to the point, it was not uncommon for me to have something rendering for hours and hours - sometimes even overnight. Rendering speed is pretty much CPU limited. IIRC there is a "draft" render option that takes a couple of minutes tops to give you an idea of what it will look like?

Hours later... was it worth it?

I don't think so... O well it was fun. Cheers for the link to that software Chilean

That's excellent - really like it.

I guess the key to any rendering software is to work out exactly how high to turn up the "sliders" more isn't always worth it, and just adds to the render time.

But in that shot with a lot of transparency and reflections, it's always going to be a long render!

Nice :D

Looks like an extreme close up of a boiled sweet, I like it though. And yes, anything with a lot of transparency and reflections takes forever.

Haha, cheers for the comments guys. Was only a little mess about really, annoying thing is when you make it you have to wait HOURS to see if the thing you produced is any good... Or you find out that 1 section looks wrong from that camera angle and have to do it all over.

Ever messed with Cinema 4D Chilean? I had some fun with that a good few years ago, lost it since then.

That's part of the fun. :D One of the renders I left overnight was a 10 second clip trying to emulate a "bullet time" effect with lots of scattered lighting. Turned out to be garbage! Never mind.

I'm downloading that Vue 7 now to have a go later. I just remembered it was 2003 last time I dabbled with anything like that. :o

Likewise, I usually mess about for a few days every couple of years. Thought id give rendering a shot now that I'm on a decent rig!

I also am joining the Vue 7 bandwagon... downloading at the moment. Stick your results up here :)

Mine was a 2.6Ghz P4 (mit HyperThreading!) with 512mb RAM and an Ati 9800 if I recall correctly. Not exactly a render monster.

I'm hoping my Q6600 might make a bit of a difference!

LOL yes - but it was years ago on an Amiga, used to mess with Imagine and Lightwave back then as well. I have a demo version somewhere I got with a book - should try it out.

Looking forward to seeing your creations guys, especially some abstract stuff, as I've not tried anything like that in Vue myself, so I'm eager to learn :D

Haha famous last words...it never gets any faster...you just keep adding more detail to your scene or upping the render quality :D

You bet. I'm going for a no nonsense render @ 1920x1200 :) @ highest DPI I can select & top AA settings etc :D.

Can abstract even be done in Vue? Haven't looked for any tutorials yet.

Oh yep it can be done - don't know how easy it compares though.

Try geekatplay.com for tutorials...more orientated towards the landscape side of it, but some useful starter stuff to get you used to the interface.
