Anyone with a broken greaphcs card? Try this.

Is this like that old trick where you put a dead hamster in the oven and it comes back to life?

Sounds fishy and risky to me. Such components as SMD-based might be very sensitive to high temperature, especially ICs, transistors, resistors, capacitors etc. Overheating them is not advised. So you should do this only on your own risk and as the last resort! IMHO

Right my brand new Gigabyte 5870 is in the oven, what do I do next ?
Should I put some garlic in there ?

In what way was it busted though? I think I still have my 3870 that was artifacting like mad, but I suspect that was down to dodge memory rather than something that could be fixed in the oven.

lol always amuses me which person came up with these 'quick fixes'. More than likely someone with an excess of money and a lack of sense.

Eventually, something blew the door off, I think it may have been an egg or a grape or something silly like that!

WHAT?

That made me LOL

I was picturing Michael Cane stood behind you...

"You were only supposed to blow the bloo...... oh, you did"

So I went home at lunch to see if I still had my old 3870. Turns out I do still have it, so I stuck it in the comp quick and booted up. Much to my surprise the card is actually working again. I have noticed a few flashing single pixels, but resetting my resolution seemed to correct this.

Anyway the card is in a much better state than it was when it went ape before, so I'm going to play it by ear. If it starts to slip I'll strip it down and stick it in the oven for a blast!

If the card is actually usable in the long run I'll be dead pleased. I was just starting to get a bit annoyed with my 3850.

It was an old microwave, and I was given the task of making to go out in style....

Long extension cable, and I did it all outside, so not to get fumes in the house....

I wish I filmed it now...

It looked something like this:
