Anyone worried about HDCP?

Why worry when its not out yet never mind seeing what the level of interest is. Also dont use my pc for watching movies and dont think dvd will die that quickly to be honest. How many people are going to dump their dvd collections? I for one wont be rushing to get 1.

I'm not worried at all.

A very small minority would upgrade their screen just to watch HD video. It's up to the companies that are setting the standards to make sure their product(s) sell well.
I imagine that their are always a way around things, given time.

Not in the slightest, planning on getting an LCD/TV to hook up via HDMI cable. Only bother playing movies on my PVR machine. That and the fact that you can almost gaurantee there will be a software crack or hardware box to allow it to work if you don't have HDCP.

Nvidia's graphic cards apparently have the hardware but it's not enabled. I would be suprised if ATI didn't as well.

They are still planning to let you watch the movies but the HD signal will be locked out unless you have an HDCP compliant display device. This means the disc will default to a lower quality picture which is still slighly better than the std DVDs we have now as it will be downscaled by a factor of 2 from the 1080 signal so because the source is HD the downconversion will look cleaner than current DVD's.

Cannot see DVDs going away anytime soon in the next 5 years as most people are only now upgrading their VHS collections to DVD & the average person will not have any interest in buying a new HD TV + DVD player + Discs just so they can get a better product which will not be night & day different to anyone unless they are sitting very close to the screen and have a magnifying glass!!

The main reason they have even bothered to create Bluray/HD is that the CSS encryption on DVD's was broken.

Lack of HDCP is the reason I've been holding off on getting myself a 24" widescreen LCD for about a year now. I wouldn't buy a monitor without it, as I use my PC for watching video.

I'm very surprised quite how few monitors there are with HDCP support considering we're only about 6 months away from HD content...

Adding HDCP support puts a monitor clearly into the TV/Video sector for import duty and quotas etc. same issue that is causing provlems with DVI connections so naturally PC panel makers are not going to rush to add them and then suffer from the import problems.

The news is a bit old, but are any of you worried that you may not be able to run the new HD - Blue Ray movies on your computer when they come out?

Worried why? If you have Vista, a HDMI graphics card and a HD/Bluray drive then it will work just fine.

Or were you referring to pirated content? HDCP has already been theoretically cracked. So really, even the pirates don't need to worry too much.

Yup, need a new monitor too. That's life I'm afraid :)

Don't worry though. HDDVD or Bluray will take a good 5 years to become mass market. Hell, first of all one of the formats has to die (hopefully Bluray!)

Yes, death to Blu-Ray!

On topic, I'm not too worried about HDCP. I can't have Sky - NTL are still deciding what to do, and there are plenty of ways to continue to view HD content minus the annoying HDCP.

Not worried at all... I've just bought the 24 inch Dell monitor and watched some HD videos on it (720p and 1080p). I wont be buying HDCP stuff just yet... maybe not even at all (for the next few years), if I had to upgrade to a new monitor.

On my computer, not at all. On my 50" rear projection tv? Yes! We bought this tv just when the "HD Ready" was comming out, and unlucky for us were stuck with a DVI port with no HDCP, and no HDMI. It really isnt HD Ready because by the sounds of it all TV companies will be introducing HDCP. I hope there is a way around HDCP, the TVs only a year old :(

That's FUD. Only the LCD panels themselves are made in the far east. The controller boards, and plastic housings are made over here in Europe and then assembled - at least they are for Samsung and LG. They've always done it this way to avoid various other import duties, besides the new 14% one.

HDMI/HDCP is already here. Just look in any electronics superstore and pretty much all of them have at least one HDMI port.

If you were sold a TV and told it was HD ready when it is not then you are entitled to a refund.
