Anything better than the H340?

James is right, they all have headphone amplifiers, if they didn't it'll sound bad from the line out (line out can be used for phones, but it sounds really really bad)

I don't want video playback for a audio player, no point. Screen sucks battery life, just prefer greyscale LCD.

i know exactly what you meant. you assumed it has an amplifier and nothing else does. not once did you even mention the word 'digital' or that other players do (all of them).
What's the difference between ones in normal players and a 'digital' one?

thats an option, but why buy an expensive player and then use a cmoy on it? better off getting an ipod and using the line-out to drive a cmoy surely..
Cause iPods give ***** sound?

the sonys are pretty much top notch in that respect - good sound quality and brilliant battery life, its just a shame that sony cant pull their finger out and get UMS support nailed down. Their software isnt up to scratch.

you tell me, you seem to think its a redeeming feature?

amplified yes (not so much any more with newer model), line-out - no. line-out from an ipod is preferred to driving an external amp with an amplified input. Come on your the one who mentioned cmoy, id expect you to know this.

It's meant to be, isnt it the fact that it amplifies a purely digital signal better than something like a CMoy which digially amplifies an analogue input?

I don't have an iPod. I have a Sony, and yes the software isn't that good (It's not *that* bad), and the sound is good.

not particularly, no. source quality is very important yes, but ive no doubt a cmoy can do better than any amp on an mp3 player.

why assume they are crap then?

Digital amplifier, class-D amplifier, PWM amplifier, whatever its called in the equiptment, all of them will extend the bettery life if used; especially if you like to use your player at high volumes. I wouldn't say they give higher quality sound, thats not often the case actually, but they are invariably more efficient at around 90% as opposed to more standard 40%. Expect to see them in a lot of portable equiptment as well as in power amplifiers.

where's the assumption. They do sound crap, especially if you get some decent headphones (well you can notice it with low end canalphones like the MD-33s, IEMs are overkill). With a CMoy yes, it's going to sound better, but why have a iPod and a CMoy when something like the Sony on it's own gives comparatively decent sound (on the flipside the Sony software is ****, when iTunes is *apparently* the best ever).

the amplified output is below par, NOT the line out. you seem to have such a misinformed opinion  ipod+external amp = better than sony. period. What do you mean by 'IEMs are overkill' ? and itunes is average, to crap. why do you think i mentioned UMS - its the best way to interface with a player period.

thats quite right. infact, sony already use 'digital' amps in their players.

That's not what I meant. The amplified output is below par, and it is significantly noticeable with canalphones, and using IEMS is just making it obvious. ipod and external amp = better than sony, but who needs/wants to carry around a cmoy and an ipod when a sony gives a comparatively decent (not better) sound quality on its own.

simple answer, they arent. If you just want to use some earphones there's better available, if you want to use an external amp, there's pretty much nothing better. being one of the best solutions doesnt make it crap. you've changed your argument now so i wont continue, i dont see the point.

interestingly (to some) ive just been playing around with rockbox on my H10. They have really progressed with it, and there's virtually no lack of sub-bass now on the player with a bit of fiddling. That and the addition of album art...it's really rather good. There's some life left in the player yet:)

Cough - anyone tried the iriver clix at all ?!?

Getting tempted since 4Gb is just big enough, rather have 8Gb tho...

Is the clix just the new name for the u10 or are there actual changes?

ps3ud0
