This is the sort of spec I would be looking for. I am hunting down a few local to me to test drive and pit them against others on the list / mentioned. Got the summer to try and whittle it down and then in a better position to grab a keeper.

Yes its a pain that it only has 4 seats but it pretty much covers all your other requirements, big boot, quick and reasonable running cost.
 
It is also quite rare which adds to the intrigue. As a first round of tests will try and get the R and FK8 test drives in and a B58 variant of some sort.
 
B58 options would include in price order:
140i
440i GC
340i (F31 Touring)
540i (G31 Touring)

I have a random thing for Touring over the Saloon versions.
 
Going back to your desire for 'event factor' - if you look at the 340i/440i, then try and test with and without MPPSK, it certainly adds this in, especially in Sport mode, but it might add too much 'event factor' for some tastes :p

The 540i is so much better than the other 3 I wouldn't even bother driving them unless you don't like the 5 series. It's a generation newer than the others.

It's almost certainly going to stretch the definition of 'around £20k' though :p

This, when you do a Stage 2+ tune with a xHP Flash, you can really pee off some people in much more expensive cars. :D Mine M140i did 100-200km/h in 7.7s with just a stage 2 tune, my mates m140i with LSD, Stage 2+ and xHP flash did 6.9s.

Budget creep!
Best I can find at moment is 25k and would require further saving or man maths to go into overdrive.
I know wishful thinking and it is a lot of car for the outlay.
When the R is around £21k it just makes a mockery of all the prices and what I am looking for.

The issue is that it's an Alfa so is it going to fall apart? I've not looked at it in depth in terms of common issues and reliability ratings.
